A Successful Business Woman

A Successful Business Woman

By:

The business world is often dominated by men and this has long been the case, recently this issue has raised debates in parliament about what could be done to promote more women into UK boardrooms.

There are a number of examples of successful women in business, one of those is Nails Inc founder Thea Green. She is the head of a successful beauty business, and for her success in business she has been awarded the 'Entrepreneurial Woman of the Future' in November 2010 and in June 2011 in the Queens Birthday Honours list she was awarded an MBE for her services for the beauty industry.

It is a big decision to start your own business project, especially for a mother of three (although she does have a supportive husband). Thea decided to pursue her own business plans, and left her job as fashion editor with Tatler magazine in 1999, she went on to raise 200,000 from investors to open her first affordable luxury UK nail store in South Molton Street, London. There was not anything similar available in the UK prior to her store, that offered quality manicures in a few minutes.

The response was immediate with her salon full of customers, Nails Inc was born. A couple of months after opening the first store, the founders opened four others and two in the House of Fraser and Debenhams. Nails Inc has since grown to over open 60 nail stores nationwide, a successful online store (that also sells nail based beauty products including Nails Inc branded nail polish) that is socially savvy (with 3,493 Twitter followers and 8,927 Facebook Likes) and a good turnover in revenue.

Thea Green is an example of a successful business woman, she joins a growing list of female leaders in the beauty and fashion world (such as Anita Roddick, Emma Harrison, Annabel Karmel and Dame Perkins). According to a 2010 report by Cranfield School of Management the number of female executive directors are increasing, with only 2% of executive directors on FTSE 100 company boards being female in 1999, whilst in 2010 alarger percentage, 5.5% of executive directors were women on FTSE 100 boards, progress is being made.
