A Students Guide To Kitchen Cookware

By:

Many teenagers will be starting university in September, and for many families the summer will be spent getting ready and buying all the items that will be needed when they leave home. For many teenagers, leaving home can be a daunting experience, and taking familiar objects such as photos, favourite CDs, cushions and books can all help to make their new room feel more homely. As well as personal belongings, there will be a small amount of practical home wares which are needed, such as lamps, rugs and kitchen cookware.

Most new students will be staying in a flat or house, and will be sharing with other students. It is often difficult to know how much kitchen cookware will be provided in their accommodation, if any, so taking a basic selection is always a good idea. Should they arrive and find that they have too much or too little; this can be easily rectified by sending items home or simply purchasing any additional items which are needed. Student kitchens often have little storage space, with perhaps one cupboard assigned to each resident. Keeping kitchen cookware to a minimum is a good idea, and sending them with just the basics is a good starting point to assess what they actually need and use! A frying pan is essential for making bacon sandwiches, and if you buy a large one they can serve some to their housemates too a sure fire way to make instant friends! A couple of medium sized saucepans are also good to have on hand; as is a colander for draining the obligatory pasta once student funds are depleted! A baking tray or two is also a good buy, as many of their dinners may consist of oven chips or pizza.

Kitchen cookware can also be appropriate to buy for their room and a small kettle and toaster can be a great help in the mornings. With a kettle and toaster even the most inexperienced cook can rustle up toast, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. These appliances should be safe on a desktop as long as it remains relatively clutter-free, and are great for ensuring that someone in shared accommodation will manage to get some breakfast on most days! Having a kettle in their room is also a good investment in case they are struck down with freshers flu, brought on from too many late nights and too few vegetables! A kettle will help them to keep warm and hydrated without having to leave the comfort of their own room.

As well as kitchen cookware and perhaps a couple of small appliances, students will also need a basic cutlery and crockery set, with perhaps two or three of each item to ensure that they do not run out. Sending teens off to university with a basic kitchen set is a good way to ensure that they can cook for themselves after you have left. If you are travelling via car with their belongings, it is easy to assess the equipment available when you arrive and take any extras home with you, leaving them with exactly what they need.
