Suzuki has been producing the Swift since 2000, it is a small subcompact car produced for the small/city car segment. The Swift was a replacement for the Suzuki Cultus, which was a supermini model as well. The Swift is a 3 or 5 door hatchback whereas the Cultus was available as a 4 door saloon and convertible as well as a hatchback.
The first generation Suzuki Swift was the first model to use the M Family engine; it came with a 1.3 and 1.5 litre engine. Both engines came as standard with a five speed manual gearbox, a 4 speed auto was available as an optional extra.
The second generation model was launched in 2004, it was a completely new car and Suzuki marketed it as a Sporty Hatchback rather than a low budget run around. The Swift's design and driving characteristics focused on the European market with its chassis refined through a road-testing program across Europe. This generation was still offered with the 1.3 and 1.5 litre engines options.
The latest generation was launched last year, it is an evolution from the previous model and features many visual changes. 2010 Swifts are fitted with a heavily revised version of the K12 engine found in the Suzuki Wagon R+.
Suzuki has announced that next month a new Suzuki Swift Sport model will go on sale.
