A Small Business' Success

It's a rough environment for businesses and customers alike. Around the nation, home foreclosures are commonplace, trust funds are in serious debt, layoffs have reached record highs, and about twenty percent of the population is now on some form of public assistance. And moreover, we're in the middle of the worst stock market crash since the Great Depression.

Around the globe, Japan, the world's second largest economy, has officially entered its first recession since 2001 this week after shrinking by 0.1% in the third quarter. The world's second-biggest economy had previous shrunk by 0.9% in the April to June quarter. The Eurozone, the European countries that adopted the Euro, has officially slipped into recession last week, and the United States is expected to follow.

Amid fears of a recession-a contraction in the economy for two consecutive quarters-auto, furniture, building, tourism, construction, chemicals and consumer durables industries all have been hurt by the fall in demand, and they all face a tough winter as businesses make a grimmer forecast of their financial prospects over the next year.

As Paul Krugman writes in New York Times (November 21, 2008), there is now a real risk that, in the absence of federal aid, not only the Big Three automakers of Detroit but also their network of suppliers will be forced to shut down, lay off all their workers and sell off their assets. And if that happens, it will be very hard to bring them back.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF)-an organization of 185 countries working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world-has even become pessimistic about the state of the economies in the world according to New York Times. It is predicting a decline of 0.3% next year for the developed economies of the world, and this would be the first time when there is an overall contraction in developed economies in the post World War II period.

Despite the worsening global economy, MAiSPACE has reported gains for the last three quarters. While its closest competitors have been reporting operating losses and cutting jobs and costs, MAiSPACE is thriving amid financial crisis and hopes to maintain that pace for the next two years.
