When looking to find the cause of a slow computer, it almost goes without saying the first thing to do is check for malware and then make sure there is no registry corruption present in the computer's operating system.

However, what happens after a computer gets a clean bill of health as far as spyware and viruses are concerned and then it is determined the registry is corruption free but the computer is still operating at snail speed?

Whenever we hook up anything, like a printer or a scanner or even a monitor to our computers, we have to install a driver so our operating system can speak to it. Nonetheless, our PC needs interpreter software so it can deal with the hardware that is often a different brand than the PC and may even be newer than the PC.

One problem arises from the fact early run drivers often need to be upgraded very soon after their release. So, if a computer owner is not aware of this, he or she could have installed a piece of software that will tend to cause problems with the computer's overall operation.

A Not Quite Perfect Driver

Not all drivers contain the best instructions for the product they are supporting. A driver like this can get installed when the underlying hardware is a generic or very inexpensive brand. This kind of driver will no doubt cause problems down the road, if not immediately.

Then again, some drivers that are perfect from the beginning become less effective after Microsoft does one of its automatic operating system upgrades. Of course, as you know, you have no say as to whether or not you want these upgrades.

So you see, device drivers can cause problems in a computer. These problems often manifest themselves by slowing down the PC's overall operations.

As you might imagine, locating a bad driver in a PC and then finding an upgrade or replacement for it could be a difficult job. Indeed, at one time this type of chore was reserved for the geeks amongst us. The good news is there are now software programs known as driver scanners that will do the whole job for us!

I believe a driver scanner, at least a good one, may end up being the most important computer tool to come along in a long time. I also believe every computer owner should have one installed on each one of his or her PCs.
