A Requirement For Any Weight, The Platform Scales

By:

Everything in our daily lives revolves around weights and measures. The ability to measure and weight objects was a huge asset to the evolution of commerce and civilization. Without the inventions that make it possible to weight and measure all manner of objects we would be limited to the barter system. Platform scales have a large distinguished part in history giving a huge contribution to productivity, commerce and creativity of modern society.

The use of the yoke showed that two equal masses would balance the beam with a support in the middle, creating the first weight system. This type of balance has been discovered in early Mesopotamia, approximately 4000 B. C. A beam scale was tricky; it required both sides of the center to be the same length.

As the ability to weigh objects become more standard and required more than equalizing the weight of two objects, mankind turned to nature. The wheat grain became the first established standard weight, and today is still known as the grain in measures. The seeds from the carob tree gave rise to carats, used for the value of gold and diamonds.

The eighteenth century saw a need for the ability to weight heavy loads, when the UK passed the Turnpike Act placing a toll based on vehicle loads. At the time, the method involved lifting the vehicle to get a weight, a time consuming and dangerous method. The need for an easier way to measure vehicle loads gave birth to the creation of platform scales or weighbridges.

Modern scales are used for the same purpose today, of weighing heavy objects. These scales come in a large number of sizes and styles ranging from a small portable scale to the large scales for trucks on the highway. These scales consist of a platform attached to the weight system, and are specifically designed for the purpose it is being used for.

Doctors offices find the use of platform scales beneficial, especially those that work with disabled or elderly individuals, the scale is easily rolled onto. The display can be mounted onto a wall where it can be seen without hindrance. Veterinary clinics also find this type of scale an asset; some of these measuring devices are mounted to a hydraulic system that permits the veterinarian to raise the scale to be used as a table for examinations.

Platform scales are in general developed to withstand a great deal of use and rough treatment for an extended period of time. The base of these scales come in two general types of materials, stainless steel or cast aluminum. The cost of a platform scale varies widely depending upon the accessories and size of the scale, starting at a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

Despite the abuse a platform scale must withstand, they have been designed to maintain excellent accuracy. The frame of the scale harbors shock resistant features to keep the scale functioning properly. When a platform scale is purchased, they are often a custom order that is created to meet the specific needs of the consumer.
