Mangalore, the primary port city of Indias Karnataka state, has been a principal seaport for centuries. It is the setting for several of the great Indian traditional epics; it was ruled by the youngest Pandava, Sahadeva, in the Mahabharata, and was the kingdom of Lord Rama in the Ramayana. One of the protagonists of the Mahabharata, Arjuna also is said to have visited the area. Mangalore was ruled by a succession of Indian dynasties prior to becoming a part of the British Empire.

Mangalore developed rapidly in the 1970s, with the establishment of a major port. The city experienced brisk progress in the latter decades of the 20th century, becoming a hub for commerce, business and information technology.
