A Reflection On Bronze Plaques

A Reflection On Bronze Plaques

By:

I was walking in town the other day and I noticed that some of the street benches had bronze plaques. As I sat down I noticed more closely the details. One of them had a person's name with the words "He loved it here" lovingly etched underneath. It was really touching. I took in the moment, reflected on the scenery from this bench, and tried to think of reasons this could have been somebody's favorite spot.

The power of memorial plaques to touch our souls is bountiful. Until I read the one on the bench I was just looking for a place to rest. All of a sudden it became so much more than that. This bench had meaning. It was important to somebody. It made me value what I would normally have taken for granted and I don't even know the person to whom it was dedicated. Feeling the emotional impact makes you realize that your actions really do leave behind an imprint. These cast bronze plaques immortalize something in your life that was of value. It's reasons like this that get me wondering how I'll be remembered. What will I do in my lifetime that will get some sort of honor?

Dedication plaques, memorial walls, they all have the same intrinsic effect. At one moment in time you are recognized for the things you've accomplished, be it as simple as being a devoted parent or child, an inspirational teacher or motivator, or a donor to a just cause. It's a way for the ones you have touched to give back to you, a big"hurrah!" on a job well done. It's also a way for future generations to know who is responsible for the establishment, no matter how long before their time it may have happened.

Now, I may have started this train of thought because of a plaque on a simple little wooden bench but that is obviously not the only kind of memorial you can use to pay tribute to an individual. Living or not, you can honor a big influence in your life and in the development of an establishment such as a school, hospital, religious institution, or community center.

Extravagantly designed donor walls can cover walls in the main atrium to a building. As time progresses names can be added to donor plaques in the ever-growing list. There's no limit to the admiration one can adorn.
