A Quick Overview Of Station Wagons As Family Cars

By:

Every family wants the best in a car. Active families need automobiles that fit their busy lifestyles and that can be used for a wide variety of activities. There are babies with safety seats, older children and teens with entourages, the occasional set of grandparents and even family pets who all need to go places in comfort and style. Along with the need to transport this precious cargo, comes the need to haul a wide variety of necessary stuff. In addition, every family wants to save as much money as possible in every way. The family friendly car that can accomplish all of these things and more has made a comeback in the form of the high-tech, sleek station wagons now on the market.

How Much Should Be Expected from Family Cars

As anyone with a family knows, just carrying home groceries for a group of people can be a real headache when there is not enough room for everything and everyone. Additionally, if home repairs are on the to-do list, it may mean enlisting the help of a neighbour or hiring a truck. Every day transportation needs could range from shopping, to carrying school and sport gear, to bringing a pet to the vet, to lugging equipment around on the job. Occasionally, baggage, gear and people need to be transported long distances for a relaxing holiday. Ideally then, the preferred family car would be able to function well in every one of these capacities. Even then, it would not be a truly great family car unless it was also comfortable. Many auto makers have taken all of this into consideration when designing todays line up of estate cars and sport wagons.

What a Look for in a Family Station Wagon

Station wagons are so much more than what they used to be. Newer models are sleek, attractive, aerodynamic and fuel-efficient. Combining the load capacity of an SUV and economy of a sedan, they also handle well and have more room for passengers. While the hatchback or SUV have only a limited amount of head-room, the design of the station wagon, whose roofline is higher and extends further back, allows more people to get in and out comfortably. A station wagon can handle six passengers in the front and middle seats. Another three people can fit in the rear-facing back seat, or that portion can be used for carrying luggage and gear. In most models, all of the middle and back seats can be folded flat, creating the king of all boots. This makes it possible to carry even the largest loads. Some models even have a split middle seat so that cargo can be loaded on half of the back seat while a passenger rides in the other.

Finding the Wagon That Fits the Family

What is right for one family may not suit another one. Starting with a list of expectations is a good idea when shopping for a sport wagon or estate car. Some things to look for include flexibility of cargo space and versatility of back seat use. If more passenger space is needed, the rear-facing back seat is a great way to go. Doors should be wide, operate smoothly and allow even the Grandparents to comfortably enter and exit. Superior handling and practicality are important considerations and most new models offer great savings on petrol. Even with the most luxurious models, most manufacturers now offer wagons to fit even the modest budget. Some offer hybrids, lessening the impact on the environment. The modern family truly has the advantage when looking for the car that does it all.
