A Quick Guide For Cordless Battery Reconditioning

By:

Have you been using an electric tool and noticing that the battery is dying out? If yes, and you are thinking of getting yourself a new battery, you must be aware of the dent that is going to be caused to your pocket. A good idea would be to recondition the battery yourself. Yes, that's right. You can do it yourself very easily. All you need is your battery charger and an electric outlet, two things which you probably have already at hand all the time anyways.
Remove the battery pack from the drill and then identify which of the leads is positive and which is negative. Place a distinctive mark on the positive lead to make it easier for you to put your battery back together after reconditioning is completed. Remove the screws from the battery case to get to the battery cells. Take note that the inside spring tends to pop out as you open the case, so be very careful not to lose it. Keep the screws and inside spring in a small container while you are reconditioning the battery.
Now that you have identified the battery cells to be reconditioned, you may prepare a 12-volt power source and put on protective gear and eyewear. Position the alligator clamps of your power source; black clamp against the negative and red clamp against the positive end of the battery. Hold the clamps in their respective positions for about two seconds and then remove them. Check to see if the battery took the charge before moving on to the next cell. You may have to zap a cell more than once before it takes the charge. If you have zapped a cell ten times and it still does not take the charge, it will have to be replaced.
Once the battery cells are revealed, pull them completely out of the casing. Mark the points where the wires need to go, so you won't have problems in reassembling the battery. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the battery's terminal piece. Be careful not to let any of the wires touch during this process as this poses a risk of explosion or electrical shock. Place the terminal piece into the container holding the screws and inside spring.
Every time the battery is charged and discharged, a build up of a crystalline deposit forms on the plates. These deposits will start to limit the number of times you can recharge it till there is no useful life to the battery. What you can do is restore it by a process that will lesson or remove these deposits and bring your battery back to life so you can use it longer.
Think of the money you can save yourself and even your family and friends by restoring batteries this way and not having to buy new ones. You could even pick up other peoples batteries that they thought where no longer usable and recondition these. The procedure is easy to do and is something you can do at home during your free time.
Let your power tool be used till the battery runs out completely. For instance, if you are reconditioning a cordless drill, let it run till the blade stops turning. Make sure that the drill woks without a load at the end. Next, use the charger to charge the battery of the power tool fully. Once it is fully charged, run the tool to check whether it running at its fully working capacity. If not, you will have to repeat the process once or twice. If you can notice a difference in the working mode, then its best to repeat the process after a month, as too much discharging and recharging may not be too good for the battery.
