A Proud Trading History Is Being Kept Alive In Liverpool By International Shipping Companies

The fortunes of Liverpool, the principal port on the west coast of England and the countrys third largest city, have been inextricably linked with international trade for centuries. In the early 19th century, the city was such an important hub for world trade that 40 per cent of all trade passed through its docks, including massive flows from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe.

A major city grew up as a result, with buildings constructed on a scale which reflected the prosperity this trade brought. Dockers used to work in large numbers close to the city centre, but much of the area which was once occupied by massive warehouses has been redeveloped to become one of the citys main visitor attractions, the Albert Dock, which houses museums, art galleries and new retail and residential developments.

International shipping still docks in Liverpool in large volumes, but further along the Mersey estuary than used to be the case. One of the most important imports is coal, which comes from south America and is loaded onto trains for transportation to the power stations of Yorkshires Aire Valley and the Midlands.

Liverpools economy has, like those of other northern English cities, diversified substantially in recent decades. The decline of heavy industry has been balanced by the rapid growth of the citys service sector, with education, health, banking and finance now accounting for the lions share of its employment.

Tourism has also taken off massively in the region, a new cruise liner terminal bringing visitors right into the heart of the city, and John Lennon International Airport at Speke, just a few miles south-east of the city centre, seeing a regular feeder service to and from Amsterdam. This allows freight to reach Liverpool from around the world quickly and easily.

Visitors to Liverpool contribute 1.3billion to the citys economy annually, and signs of the benefits of this massive input are clear, especially in the Liverpool ONE shopping centre, which has sent the city climbing up the rankings of UK retail centres.

As well as the airport, Liverpool enjoys good road and rail links to other parts of the UK, lying just off the end of the M62 trans-Pennine motorway, and within easy reach of the M6 from Birmingham to the north-west and on into Scotland.
As a result, getting goods here from any part of the UK is easy, with parcel delivery companies able to offer a wide choice of means of getting goods to where they and needed in a timely fashion.
