A Nod To Novelty Neckties

By:

Neckties are very often associated with formalwear and structured elegance. A must-have item in the closet of every contemporary man, the modern necktie comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs to fit virtually every occasion. And while most neckties display either a solid color or simple, repetitive geometric patterns, a group of neckties stand out boldly with their novelty.

A New Age of Novelty
Nobody is really sure when the first novelty tie emerged, and to date no party has stepped up to make the claim. The earliest verifiable appearance of novelty ties happened sometime in the 1940s, when tie manufacturers began applying unusual designs and prints on their products. Eccentric artist Salvador Dali certainly helped the trend move along when he created an entire collection of art on silk ties.

From Dalis wearable works, tie makers picked up the idea of using the necktie as a mini-canvas. During that period, neckties were made that carried artworks as far-ranging as Dalis own kooky art to Van Goghs and Monets timeless paintings. The images that were printed on ties then began to progress from art to symbols and figures. Novelty ties were quickly becoming the canvas of choice, the anti-establishment statement.

Although the British were a little more reticent about the trend, novelty ties eventually jumped the Atlantic Ocean and made it into UK culture. It held a firm spot there among the young, especially during the anti-establishment 80s.

Novelty In the Nineties
By the time the 1990s rolled in, just about every major historical event, significant public figure and personal pastime had been represented in one way or another on a novelty tie. Commemorative ties had become a regular item for special occasions like anniversaries or inaugurations, and some of the most recognizable names in showbiz had their faces immortalized on a neckwear accessory.

Novelty neckties also found a niche market as a seasonal trend. It was the perfect way for men to express their merriment during Christmas, New Years and just about every other special occasion. Whether you will be celebrating Halloween or Valentines Day, there is a novelty tie out there that is designed just for the holiday. And it is not just calendar holidays that have been making it into the fabric.

More recently, manufacturers have even begun incorporating technology into novelty ties. You can now find ties that will display a short message on a small LED screen, or play the chorus of holiday tunes when pressed a certain way. It is just another innovation that brings the novelty tie one step further when it comes to self-expression.

When Novelty is a No-No
Although novelty ties are perfectly fine for casual events and private get-togethers, they are absolutely unacceptable at formal and even semi-formal affairs. If you are attending a large or public casual event, it is also a good idea to avoid novelty ties altogether. It is very easy for novelty ties to look tacky and cheap, and that is something you dont want to do when you are with anybody other than family and close friends.
