A Night Out In In Murcia City. (version 2)

By:

The second "rough" guide to bars in Murcia.
Going out to bars in Murcia is great fun if you're English.
Whilst you can still go out the old fashioned English way (Go out at 6.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. the worse for wear) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most places in Murcia City don't really get going until around 1.30a.m. so you'll miss out on most of the amosphere if you're in bed too early.

Here's a useful tip: To do justice to your evening in Murcia City adjust your body clock to a Spanish night out by altering your watch by an hour. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.00pm. Before that, if you want to be out and about why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (next to the Cathedral) and admire the beautiful Cathedral. from there. You could thenamble down to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a snifter in the "La Muralla" cocktail bar, one of the few places in Murcia where the old Arab walls can still be seen.

This is article two in this series. Here 's some more of some of the more interesting bars in Murcia City.

El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) You're struggling to escape from techno music in Spanish clubs and El Mentidero is no different to the rest. Lively bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's near the
University.

Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente lamo.) Unusually for pubs in Murcia City this is a Wild West theme pub with
cowboy outfits and saloon-style bars. It's actually a really good night out if you're in the mood for a knees up!!.

Sala Univesal (1 Avenida Juan Carlos.)Brash and exciting - a well known bar in Murcia City. There are several rooms playing
different sounds so something for most here...

Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) A city centre pub for the young crowd. The sounds range from
Blues to Rock to Jazz. Stays open until 3.30am.
Utopia (7 Velzquez.) Very different bar and is described by the owners as a bar-theatre. The fascinating dcor imitates theatrical scenery. Utopia has a large variety of acts on stage ranging from musicians, small bands, to actors reading monologues. After the live stuff it's mainly Brit-pop, rock and blues.

La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Martn de Porres.) Bar with a relaxed atmosphere which offers music
from local talent. Also features really good exhibitions of art on the walls.

Sala Fluid (Orilla de Azarbe.) Another techno rubbish joint that's open until 6.00. Good idea to get some strong coffee
before entering if you want to make it through the night. Brilliant array of cocktails available, though pace yourself or the legs may not stand the pace..

DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) This place claims to be the only true club in Murcia city centre. Located in the busy university area. This is a really busy spot during term time. DNC plays house music and standard pop set in an atmosphere with trendy dcor. Free drink with your admission.

Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) This probably the most popular bar in Murcia City, playing
Seventies disco and dance. Three rooms with different sounds that provide something for most tastes. Fridays and Saturdays are stop out nights from 2am-6.30am. (See what I mean about coming out later?)

La Codiga (Gran Va Alfonso X ) One of the more "local" bars in Murcia City. Latin rhythms are the speciality in this club.
Chest wigs and medallions are optional ;-)

Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Just a short way outside the city, Super 8 is an chilled out
bar/club which usually has one band on stage each week. The clientelle is mainly a youngish, predominately indie type crowd and opens from 12.30am-6.30am

Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Off the wall bar that specialises in miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. hurts my
head..) . Regular target for people on hen/stag parties in fancy dress at weekend.

Kennedy Bar (Callejn de Berruezo.) Lively Irish bar that's popular all day. Get down here for some Guinness and English soccer. Good range of other ales also. Live comedy on
Wednesdays. Buy one get one free on drinks when soccer matches are on.

Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Nearly all the clubs in Murcia City are outside the city centre due to restrictions on noise levels. Kallejon is no exception. There are two dance floors where you can hear music ranging from Spanish pop to commercial techno
rubbish (only my opinion). Opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (very late).

Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is right next to the Roman Theatre. This bar has livegroups and comedy shows on stage. It's well worth a visit.

That should be enough for the 2nd instalment of bars in Murcia City. There's plenty to be going on with anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia bars that you think should be mentioned then email me and let me have details. Cheers!!
