There are many people who are at risk of TMJ and headaches or currently suffer with these symptoms on a daily basis, resulting from misalignment of the TMJ. There are numerous factors for this recurring problem. Anxiety and stress that lead to continued and repetitive grinding of the teeth is often a major underlying factor.

The abbreviated name TMJ or TMD also known as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction is as a result of the teeth biting out of line. Any person who has this condition, may also have the associated symptoms of headaches and even more associated side effects.

There are certain degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis which are known to cause loss of the cartilage leading to the disorder. Previous fracture of the jaw can also lead to this condition. People who are stressed and depressed are also known to grind their teeth, which can cause headaches and tension to accumulate.

The symptoms include pain or fullness in the ear, facial pain and dizziness is also possible in more sever cases. The facial pain can be aggravated while eating or chewing on food. Some individuals may even experience pain while yawning and it can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. There are a number of treatment options that are available and the choice should be made based on the severity of the dysfunction.

The grinding of the teeth is one possible cause and using a mouth guard will avoid the headaches from recurring. Use chewable substances, for example, a gum to soothe the jaw and this will assist in repositioning the jaw bone. There are several other jaw physical activities that can be performed daily. By moving the jaw using the mouth gently, this will reduce the problem. Try not to move suddenly because this will only bring back the ache. Light mobilization throughout the various ranges of motion can help to gently realign the jaw and ease muscle tension. Ultimately, though, this is only palliative.

Similarly if stress is the reason behind such pains, practices like yoga and tai chi can be of great help. Adequate sleep is also important; so make sure you sleep for at least eight hours a day as this would refresh your mind and body.

In many cases a loss of normal curvature in the cervical spine and specifically the upper cervical spine can directly, or indirectly, contribute to issues with the TMJ. Adjacent soft tissues and joint should always be checked for possible interference.

If a person has facial pain, hard food involving a lot of chewing or movement of the jaw should be avoided. Food habit must be customized accordingly. A heating pad or a warm cloth can also come in handy. As for bodily postures, slouching should be avoided and care should be taken to avoid excessive forward head postures. This would not only prevent such headache but also add to the appearance of the person.

All these simple steps will help in getting rid of TMJ in an effective way. If none of these simple fixes work you should consult with an experience Chiropractor to determine if there are additional underlying factors that may be affecting the alignment of your jaw and spine and have them corrected.
