A Look At Some Expensive Beers Are They Worth It?

By:

Beer has been around for over a 1000 years. And in all these years of experimentation and fine-tuning recipes, it's become the world's large alcoholic beverage by volume, by a long shot. This accomplishment brings with this millions of beer lovers around the world. From the average Bud Light dude, to Organic beer lovers to the crazy connoisseurs that find appeal in the rare beers.
Like anything else, the value of an item is different for different people. A teetotaler wouldn't pay a dime for Black Label Whisky. An animal lover beer-lover wouldn't care for the BrewDog beer even if they paid them money to drink it.
Beer is not a necessity for most. It's luxury at some level. Such items, similar to other collectibles and antiques, can hold a lot of value if they are DIFFERENT or RARE. That's what sets them apart from the rest and there is always someone willing to pay a crazy amount of money for such specialties. How else would you explain $5m million sale for the James Bond car?
Let's take the extreme example of the BrewDog Brewery "The End of History" beer that sold out on the day of its launch for $765 per bottle. The BrewDog was 55% alcohol, stuffed inside a stuffed "road kill" animal. PETA would love, that wouldn't they? Only 12 of these were made at all. That's what made them so unique and valuable.
Organic Beers are usually about 20% more expensive than regular gourmet beers. Does that make them worth it? Not if you don't believe in Organic foods. But if you are an environmentally conscious person, then it's worth that extra bucks to live a fulfilling sustainable lifestyle.
Similarly, The Tutankhamen Ale is made only in Cambridge University laboratory and costs about $52 per bottle. So whats so amazing about it that makes it worth that much money? Its brewed in a Cambridge laboratory from a recipe discovered in the Queen Nefertitis Temple of the Sun in Egypt. The beer is named after King Tutankhamen, quite famous from his tombs and stories. The temple, which housed a brewery, is believed to have been built by King Akenhaten, Tuts predecessor and likely father. So, if you were a history buff, how much would you pay to include a piece of history like that in your house, knowing that its made in only one place in the world and in limited numbers? $52 is cheap if you look at it like that.
So, short answer, its worth it to those that care for it. And I do see sense in that approach. Life is too short to spend it only on commoditized commercialized things. Choose your beers based on your lifestyle, not by their price tags. That's the way to live life and enjoy beer.
