A Look At Common Eye Problems In Children What You Should Know

By:

Vision problems affect about 5 percent of preschool-aged children and about 25 percent of children in elementary and middle school. When children cannot see properly and the vision difficulties are not properly corrected, they may have difficulty learning, adjusting in school, and even developing their personality.

If your child is having trouble seeing properly or if you suspect he or she may be having vision problems, it is important to take your child to an eye doctor. Even if you do not suspect vision problems, your child should have regular vision screenings, both through vision testing performed at school and visits to the eye doctor. These vision tests can help determine if your child has any common vision problems found in children, which are highlighted below.

LAZY EYE

Lazy eye, technically referred to as amblyopia, is a disorder in which vision is reduced in one eye that may not have received adequate use. In most cases, a lazy eye can develop either from a misalignment of eyes (crossed eyes) or the ability of one eye to focus better than the other.

COLOR BLINDNESS

Color blindness, or color deficiency, does not mean your child cannot see color, but rather he or she cannot distinguish either shades of a color or colors as a whole (depending on its severity). Color deficiency is more prevalent in boys than girls.

NEARSIGHTEDNESS

Nearsightedness, techincally referred to as myopia, is the inability to clearly see distant objects. The condition is caused by an elonged eyeball that cannot properly focus on far objects.

FARSIGHTEDNESS

Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is the opposite of nearsightedness. Due to a shortened eyeball, a child cannot clearly see near objects.

ASTIGMATISM

An astigmatic eye may be shaped more oblong than round, causing the power of the eye to be different in one angle than another. For example a child with astigmatism may be able to better see vertical lines than horizontal ones (or vice versa).
