A Little About The Transition Into Menopause

By:

In our culture, we place increasing emphasis on the young and the beautiful, particularly in women. But as we age, we need to be less concerned with facelifts and tummy tucks and increasingly aware of the changes which occur in our bodies and how to manage them--particularly when menopause begins to set in.

Every woman experiences menopause differently, and you probably won't be able to predict the age at which you will experience it too far in advance.

The "average," age for menopause onset is 51, but some women experience it as early as their late thirties, while others do not have symptoms until their mid-sixties!

Earlier menopause is generally caused by severe abnormalities such as a hysterectomy or chemotherapy. If you have not had to deal with such life-changing anomalies, chances are you will be much closer to the average age range.

However, there is also some relationship to heredity. If your grandmother, mother, sisters, and/or aunts transitioned into menopause earlier or later, you may follow suit.

If you take good care of your body--eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and keep your stress level under control--your bodily changes will probably feel less jarring.

But keep in mind that hormonal fluctuations will begin as you get older--as soon as your early thirties--even if the full process doesn't finish for a decade or longer.

There are many typical symptoms of menopause, such as weight gain, water retention, mood swings, hot flashes, and night sweats. For each woman, the severity of these symptoms is different. Some women might experience twenty-four hours' worth of dripping sweats due to unbearable hot flashes, while others just feel mild warm spells.

Most women associate menopause with the cessation of their regular menstrual period. But this typically occurs at the latter end of menopause; it can actually take several years from the onset to actually stop having your period. This transitional stage is called "perimenopause."

Before the final "drying up," of your period, you might actually experience light spotting. Some women even struggle with very heavy bleeding for extended lengths of time.

Vaginal dryness and lowered sex drive can make this a strained period for you and your significant other, especially because sex can even become painful at times. Be sure to keep the lines of communication open with your companion so they know to be both understanding and loving.

Menopause can be a wonderful adventure if you try to see it that way and keep up a good attitude. As mentioned before, exercising and eating right while managing your stress in an effective manner will make this much easier on your body. Work closely with your doctor to find treatments that work well so that this can be a blossoming point of your life.
