A Lady Without Teeth

By:

While in play, there is a chance that a pro basketball player will be hit in the mouth therefore causing his teeth to end up spilling onto the court. When it comes to an Indiana state basketball team guard, negligence resulted to decaying and loose upper teeth.

There is one lady who lives with soft tooth buds barely emerging from her gums where her baby teeth never appeared and no real teeth. Her first dentures were received at age 3 1/2 and by the time she was 12 this 41 year old Bloomington nurse got a new set.

Permanent implants, teeth anchored on metal rods supported by frameworks hidden underneath the gums, are what these two make use of. According to the nurse, to have real teeth will be wonderful.

Considering dental implants, they have existed since the early Egyptians but many are still not familiar with them. Most of the time, frustrated denture wearers get dental implants as these become widely accepted by dentists.

About 300,000 Americans a year will be getting implanted teeth as the number of dentists performing implants has grown tenfold according to a National Institute of Health conference.

The president of the 2,000 member American Academy of Implant Dentistry estimated that implant dentistry was a $150 million industry last year.

Not for everyone are implants in this case especially for people who won't give the devices the care and cleaning necessary to prevent infection and prosthetic failure and those who have overriding health problems.

Some people are embarrassed to let their spouses or others see them without their false teeth according to an Indianapolis dentist while a few people enjoy having to take dentures out at night.

Even if this is way beyond that from a psychological point of view, some eat better. Never hearing of implants are sixty percent of the respondents to a marketing survey last year.

From the National Institute of Dental Research came a survey three years ago which says that these can be used by a lot of people. The problem faced by forty two percent of Americans over age 65 and 4 percent of those aged 35 to 64 is having no teeth.

Able to provide implant dentistry with a tremendous opportunity for growth is the growing older market or a wealthy segment of the population

With this, there are fewer and fewer patients that cannot be treated. Implants can be used selectively depending on the patient preference and the patient's condition.

Getting an implant is a matter of being able to properly maintain the implant. It requires meticulous oral hygiene after the device has been placed, so it requires a highly motivated individual.

Infection around the implant would erode the bone where many of the devices are implanted. In getting implants, it is important that patients do not lack adequate bone. Considering a subperiosteal implant, this is an implant that is not attached to the bone and a wiry framework is fitted between the bone and the gum.

Taking implants into consideration, these can cost as little as $600 for a single tooth or as much as $10,000 for a full upper or lower arch depending on the type. When it comes to implants, most of them are performed as outpatient surgery and covered by Medicare.

Based from the NIH statement, there was little information on long term effectiveness of implants and this is the reason why a national registry should collect data.

In terms of 80 percent to 90 percent of implants performed on patients, these are successful for at least five to 10 years. When it comes to the subperiosteal implant of the 28 year old basketball player, it can last him forever.
