A Kitchen Perfect For Entertaining

Whether your kitchen is large or small, there are certain organizational tips you can use to maximize your space for entertaining.

A must for the best kitchens for entertaining are roomy and feature an open floor plan. If you have a small area and are remodeling, the first decision may be to expand the kitchen area. This can be done by adding a room or taking down an existing wall. If you have a formal dining area, you can remove the wall to create a larger kitchen space. Eat in kitchens are preferable to two separate rooms, accommodating more people and improving traffic flow.

When planning for the food preparation areas, consider two islands instead of one large island. Add tall stools at the back of one island for seating and conversation while prepping the food. Two islands also increase traffic flow through the kitchen. One island can be set up with a prep sink and wine cooler, while the other can feature a counter top-mounted stove top for convenience and safety.

You need to consider the clean up station, too. Consider large sinks that can accommodate tall pots and pans. Drawer-style dishwashers can be installed so that delicate china and glassware can be washed separately from grimy pots. You will also save money by washing smaller loads as needed.

A butler's pantry enables guests to gather in an area away from the main cooking and preparation space. The traditional location for a butler's pantry is in a short hallway between the kitchen and dining room. You can also store glassware and linens here. If you have overnight guests, you can put coffee out for them in butler's pantry. Guests can get their coffee and be part of the morning kitchen activity without feeling like they are interrupting the workflow.

Hidden appliances make the kitchen perfect for entertaining. Key appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators and ovens can be hidden with cabinet facing, blending right into the rest of the cabinetry. A larger refrigerator with features for entertaining is ideal for the host and hostess. Consider a separate beverage drawer to eliminate the need to open the refrigerator repeatedly.

Lighting in the kitchen is important. Pendant lights are excellent over islands to illuminate these work stations. Recessed lighting under cabinets can brighten counter top areas that tend to be dark. A fixture over the table allows light on the fabulous meal you have prepared.
