A Key To Regaining Peace Of Mind When You Are Feeling Anxious

By:

As anxiety disorder sufferers, we are always bombarded by negative emotions, thoughts and views about other people, ourselves and situations. As a result, often times, we are tense and feeling anxious. Our anxiety disorders result in problems for us; like failure to properly assert ourselves or communicate effectively; which in turn feed into anxiety. Therefore, we are caught in a vicious circle of anxiety.

Often, our feeling anxious is worsened by lack of self belief and self confidence. We feel inferior to other people and do not value our own contributions, capabilities and positive attributes. Sometimes, we have excessive fear of disapproval and this may make us subject to the whims of others. But hei! We can do something about all this and learn to master or control our anxiety disorders.

One thing that can really help when you are feeling anxious is your ability to invalidate negative thoughts and feelings. For example, you might come across a person whom you know. You greet him but he does not respond. As an anxiety disorder sufferer, you are overly sensitized by this and you interpret his failure to respond to your greeting as an indication that he dislikes you. You might feel hurt and tell yourself that you are not good enough or you are worthless. But the reality is that you could be over-reacting.

As a way of invalidating such thoughts, think of all possible reasons why somebody may not respond when you greet him. Maybe, he may not have heard you. Or perhaps, he may have been distracted or mentally preoccupied. Or maybe, he was just feeling blues and overwhelmed by problems of his own. So try and find another time to approach the person directly, your face relaxed and your hand outstretched for a hand-shake. You might be pleasantly surprised as he greets you back in a friendly manner. In other words, whenever you have a negative thought, you must always try and validate it. If you think somebody is ignoring you and you are feeling anxious about it, approach and engage him in a conversation in order to test the validity of your thoughts. More often than not, you will realise that you have been worrying over nothing- your thoughts are baseless.
