A Job Opportunity At Home -a Typical Workday

By:

Are you contemplating working from home? These days, it seems everybody wants to "live the good life" with an at-home business. It's true that such an opportunity at home can be the ideal way to balance work and family. But what will a typical workday be like without the structure you are accustomed to?

You can anticipate implementing strategic time management skills in your at-home workday. When working for an employer, your hours are set for you. You arrive at work, stay for the duration, clock out, and you're done for the day. With a work opportunity at home, you are not required to keep these set hours. However, without some structure, it's easy to while away time and accomplish little in a given day.

A typical workday for many people working from home will start when the kids are off to school. In the ensuing peace and quiet, it can be easy to delve in immediately and work for a solid couple of hours. One to two-hour blocks of time allow you to settle into the task at hand and accomplish some real work. Although interruptions, like phone calls, are a given with an opportunity at home, you must be able to prioritize such calls and redirect yourself back to work after an interruption.

Breaks are essential. With an opportunity at home, no one is going to tell you when it's "break time." For your own sanity and well-being, you must provide these respites for yourself. Every couple of hours, you should stop work for ten to fifteen minutes. Getting out of your chair, doing some stretches, allowing your eyes to rest from the computer screen, and eating a healthy snack are great ways to rejuvenate mid morning. Then, you can resume work until lunchtime.

The nature of your work may necessitate client lunches or networking. If not, it's still important to take a lunch hour (or at least half hour) each day. There may be days where you are forced to eat "on the go," but you should not let this become your norm. It's important to take time away from the job to read, unwind, or even meet with friends for a little social interaction while enjoying a nutritious meal that will give you energy for your afternoon.

Settling back in to work after lunch, it is a good idea to repeat the morning blocks of work time, punctuated by another break, before "quitting time." Since your workplace is there in your dwelling, there is always an opportunity at home to be working. It's essential that you allow yourself to stop working for the day. By setting realistic goals, you can feel that you have accomplished something tangible in your workday, even though, for the at-home business person, the work may never be truly done.

Every business is different and places unique demands on the at-home entrepreneur. By structuring your day in a manner that accommodates your needs as a person as well as the needs of your business, you will be at your most productive, and your opportunity at home will have the greatest chance at success.
