Reuben Trane invented the first of the Trane air conditioners in 1931. The patent was for a machine that could blow air over well water contained in coils that would cool the air, which provided the technology needed to build on for years to come.

During the time in America when the first unit was patented, there was little demand for air conditioners in homes as the Great Depression was raging across the nation. Movie theaters were the first businesses to really embrace this new invention, and soon they were in almost every theater in the nation.

With the beginning of World War II, the Trane engineers went to work developing the intercooler, which was used in Allied planes to give them the needed boost to perform as well as the German planes. Naval ships also required equipment from the company and thousands of ships were able to benefit from the technology that they readily made available.

Businesses and the military remained the primary clients of Trane heating and cooling units until the late 1950s, when the housing market began to blossom. The units had gotten smaller and more cost efficient with time, and many new homes were built with these units already installed. As older homes needed remodeling, adding a heating and cooling system was at the top of the list for most families.

In the 1980s, as energy concerns began to circle the globe, the dedicated Trane engineers were faced with a new challenge. Keeping the initial cost of a unit low had always been a priority, but now they needed to run on less energy. With the advancement of technology, they were able to successfully meet these new demands with skill and finesse.

There are many modern varieties of air conditioning units to choose from on the market today. The housing industry generally chooses to install central heat and air units in new homes because they are so much more efficient than window units.

Each situation is different and the heating and cooling needs of each residence and business should be discussed with a professional before a decision is made. The closer a business is to the Equator, the more necessary a good cooling system will be. The same will be true for a location further away from the Equator, their heating needs will usually be greater than their cooling needs. Not only is geography important when making a decision, the building itself will need to be looked at to determine what type of unit would be appropriate for the space.

Trane air conditioners have undergone an incredible amount of change since their original invention, and there are more changes in store. With the changing global climate and the ability for more companies and homes to purchase these units internationally, changes can be expected in what product types are invented and what types will be brought back for purchase. For instance, window units have declined in popularity in America, but they may still be very popular for the needs of those in other countries where the need for cooling is intermittent due to the climate they are in. Many times, a product that was discontinued in one area will be made available in another to meet a more specific need.
