A History Of Multilevel Marketing

A History Of Multilevel Marketing

By:

Commercial enterprise has been a facet of human existence and culture since mankind first began to barter with others in exchange for goods, services and other commodities. In fact, some scholars have claimed that the worlds first modern corporations were the churches and monasteries in Western Europe. Still others claim that business began in the monastic establishments found in India, mainland China, and Japan. Still others point to the guilds, which dominated the Italian peninsula during the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries. Wherever the modern corporation began, business is far older than that. The first businessmen, whoever and wherever they were, probably gained their first stable clients through the quality of their wares and word-of-mouth. Modern business professionals and economists have observed this same trend in the modern era, and refer to this type of business arrangement as direct sales, or multilevel marketing. Although traveling salesmen were a fixture in American society from the late nineteenth century until the 1960s, the corporations have been steadily gaining ground against Americas traditional small locally owned businesses. In fact, the corporate businesses have become so strong that they are beginning to dominate American economic policies and political systems.

However, the system of multilevel marketing was first developed in 1945 to facilitate the widespread sale of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies in both the national and international markets. Since its inception in late 1945, MLM has also been employed in the sale of cosmetics, household cleaning supplies, toiletries, skin care products, holistic medicines, and household appliances. Although the traveling salesperson has vanished from daily life in Europe and the U.S, MLM-based operations continue to thrive and expand across the nation and the overseas as well. The success of this business strategy is largely due to the owners extreme work ethic, and their commitment to personalized customer service. However, the development of the internet, as well as mlm software suites such as party plan software and district sales software, have also contributed to this type of commercial ventures continued development. These types of software allow for quick and easy communications between management and local owners, as well as those communications between customer and associate. At the same time, these programs allow management, employees and customers to trace and monitor, accounts, employee performance, orders for products, and inventories. Furthermore, these programs allow leaders to post and change promotional offers to the public, which will definitely expand these small business operations. Based on the information presented here, it is safe to say that MLM-based businesses will continue to gain ground in the US and Western Europe as more types of MLM programs make their way into the business world.
