A Guide To Wearing Pocket Watches

By:

Have pocket watches gone the way of the dodo bird? In that we mean, are they extinct? Not exactly. Pocket watches were originally more of a fashion statement than a timepiece for wealthy men who were considered important enough not to waste their time. The need to remove the watch from the pocket and open it to check on the time, draws attention to the procedure and increases the implied importance of a man. Usually a pocket watch is worn only when also wearing a vest.

It is attached to a button hole with a chain. This chain was used as more of a protection against pick pockets than a protection from accidentally dropping the watch. There are now also casual pocket watches that are kept in black leather pouches and attached to belts as a clip-on. Whenever you wear a pocket watch you can be sure to be noticed when you take it out of your pocket to open it and view the time.

Classic pocket watch designs now come in a variety of styles. They can be gold, silver, or simple stainless steel. They can be very ornate or minimal. The most fancy pocket watches from the past, where like miniature fine clocks in that the best ones (made in Switzerland) would also chime or play music upon opening.

These antique pocket watches are very serious collectibles now and command pricey values at auction. They had elaborate decorative cases which fit the particular likes of the gentleman wearing them. For example, U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt always wore a pocket watch. Many were given to him with cases that showed natural and hunting scenes and animals. Roosevelt gave the Indian Chief Quanah a pocket watch inscribed: "Quanah Parker, Comanche Chief.". Roosevelt went with Quanah when he traveled to Oklahoma to hunt coyotes. Later he had a beaded pouch made in the American Indian style for the watch.

Whether you want to be a bit eccentric, or hark back to the days of yesteryear, wearing a pocket watch in modern times is still quite appropriate. You will almost certainly stimulate a conversation about your pocket watch when you bring it out into view. If you can afford it and have the interest you can get one of the more rare antique pocket watches.

Each of which has an interesting story to tell, especially the ones that were engraved with messages of significant historical meaning. However; be cautious where you buy a pricey antique watch, make sure it has been certified by an expert as authentic if you pay a lot for it, because there are many known examples of pocket watches with faked inscriptions.

Ones that are claimed to have been carried by Buffalo Bill or other western heroes were routinely faked and sold by unscrupulous traders as the real thing, when men of those times were all wearing pocket watches.
But if you find a pocket watch that suits your fancy and your budget, make sure you wear it with a nice suit with a vest and let the chain dangle down from the pocket to connect to the button hole so that you wear it properly.
