A Guide To The Best Concrete Sealer Application

By:

Concrete sealer is a protective product that is designed to keep water from absorbing into your concrete. Water can damage your concrete causing it to stain, crack and break apart. There are a variety of products available on the market.

Concrete is typically a strong and durable material. It can be installed as an indoor sub floor or an outdoor foundation. Any concrete that is not covered with a protective layer of carpet or wood should be protected with a sealing solution.

There are sealing solutions available that allow the surface to breathe in order to allow any moisture vapors to escape. This product works well in areas of extreme temperatures where thawing and freezing takes place. Be sure to use this type of sealing product if you live in an area where the temperatures vary and you experience freezing and thawing circumstances.

Other products do not allow the surface to breathe. These solutions create protective barriers on the surface. They do not allow any moisture to penetrate into the material. These solutions work best indoors and outdoors in areas where there freezing and thawing conditions are not seen. This type of product can be used if you live in an area where you do not experience any freezing or thawing circumstances.

Be sure to use a sealing product that will work best with any color additives and that is designed specifically for a concrete application. Check the instructions provided by the manufacturer before you apply it.

When applying this product you will need to allow it enough time to harden. Do not apply it to any surface that has not yet cured. If your concrete is newly poured, you will need to give it enough time to completely cure before you seal it. This should take about a month.

Older surfaces can be sealed any time. These surfaces will need to be washed to ensure that the surface is clean before you apply your sealing product. Use a broom or vacuum to remove any excess dirt, dust or debris from the surface before you use a soap and water solution on it. Allow the surface to dry completely before you apply the sealing solution. You should also repair any cracks or other damage before you begin.

You can check to see how porous your concrete is. A porous surface will better absorb the sealing solution. To check the surface, allow a few droplets of water to fall on it. Look to see how quickly the water absorbs into the concrete. If it takes a long time, or does not get absorbed at all, you can make the surface more porous. Use some sandpaper to lightly sand it.

Apply the concrete sealer with a roller or a rag. Rollers work best with products that have a water or solvent base. Rags work best with polyurethane based solutions. In either case, be sure to use long strokes to apply a thin, even layer. Allow it dry completely before applying a second coat.
