A Guide To Keeping Pet Canaries

By:

The Canary can be found in the Canary Islands and it has the scientific name Serinus Canaria. They are pretty small, only10-12 cm in length. A well taken care of Canary can live for up to 10 years!

Many of them are rather timid and shy and unlike bigger bird species, they usually don't do well when they're handled. There are of course exceptions but many canaries don't like to be touched and held in the hand. But that doesn't mean they are not sociable birds. They love interacting with owners but from the comfort of a cage that is large. The canaries can be sometimes extremely territorial, so use caution if you have more than one canary per cage. If they have a dominant behavior, it may be hard to handle.

When speaking about canaries, many people say they are yellow. It is true. Many of them are yellow but there are many different types of Canary in many different colors. When you do selective breeding, a lot of new color mutations appear everyday, like white, bronze and red.

Most of the diet of a Canary is made of pellets of high quality, made especially for them. Besides this diet, they should also receive every day fruits, fresh sprouts or vegetables.

You should make sure that Canaries get enough exercise and their cage is large enough, so they can fly in it. Since they get easily bored, you should also make sure they have safe toys at their disposal.

Even though Canaries don't like to be handled, like budgies or cockatiels do, they can be a great pet for someone that would like a small and intelligent feathered friend.

The reasons canaries are so popular is the color, conformation, or the singing. Every type of Canary has its own great point, so each owner should research them and see which one works best for their house.

Many people consider that because they are small, canaries are good companions for children but that is not like that all the time. The canaries are very fragile and they can get hurt easily by children. And if you decide to purchase a canary, make sure you also buy a big cage because a big cage provides the space and security they need and you allow him to fly every day. In this way you will keep him healthy and happy. And don't forget to never clip a Canary's wings!
