A Guide To Facial Hair For Men

By:

Your expression in your facial hair can be as individual as your hairstyle. You have the choices that range from a cleanly shaven face, to letting a bit of stumble grow out - the infamous "five o'clock shadow", to having a moustache, goatee, sideburns or a full beard. You can also mix up the combinations of moustache, goatee, and sideburns. Sideburn fashion has gone from at times being very thick in fashion, like during the 1970's when thick sideburns, also called "mutton chops" were the rage to being completely out of fashion and to something in between. T

he bushy mutton chop has given way to the very trimmed thin-line sideburn that is only a line of hair demarking the area. This same pin-striping shaving technique has been applied to the moustache and beard area were the only thing left unshaved is a thin line.

Three areas of the face can be connected with the pin-stripe shaving technique which gives the effect of drawing a thin line linking the areas. If you use this technique to connect your sideburn area with your chin it is called a "chin strap." If you let a little hair grow under your chin that is called a "soul patch."

What does your facial hair style say about you? You may think having a bit of stubble is sexy and others may think you should pay more attention to your personal hygiene. Another thing to consider is the shape of your face and if you have any blemishes. If you have a fat round shaped face, you want to avoid having a full beard unless you revel in your fatness, because a full beard on a fat round face will make you look fatter. Maybe you like being a teddy bear, having the Jerry Garcia (deceased band member from the Grateful Dead) look from eating too much Ben & Jerry's ice cream. If so, go for it. A full bear in this case will make you look even more roly-poly.

On the other hand if your face is long and narrow, or if you have a very weak chin or a face full of acne blemishes and scars, you will find an advantage in having a beard. For the long thin face, a full beard rounds it out and balances the facial features. The beard hides a weak chin and of course is fantastic at covering up scars and blemishes. A full beard definitely makes you look older so be aware of that. If you want to look like a distinguished university professor, the full beard is the best way to achieve that look.

But if you want to look ten years younger, then shave it all off and show your "baby face" to the world. If you are of the age that you are showing some gray, the current fashion is to dye your facial hair, unless again you intentionally want to look old. One thing nice about facial hair fashion, except for the wait when letting it grow in, if you don't like the look you can always shave it off.
