A Guide To Coarse Fishing Rods

By:

Any coarse fisherman knows that the foremost tool they need to carry is their trusty fishing rod. Having the right equipment is essential and depending on the type of coarse fishing to be done, there is a specific and appropriate rod for the job.

In general terms, a fishing rod is a light weight, hollow tube which is usually made of carbon fiber or fiberglass. They typically measure between 8 and 13 feet in length and are used in conjunction with a reel. However, there are different types of rods for different types of coarse fishing.

First, there is the float rod. These rods can be longer than usual, measuring between 11 and 18 feet. The length of it lends itself to easy casting of light weight tackle, and also for quick response when a fish strikes. The fishing line is strung through the rings of a rod so that the line extends from the reel to the end of the rod and stays in orderly fashion. This rod has more rings than usual, and the rings hold the line further away from the pole. This feature keeps the line from sticking against the rod in wet conditions. Float rods typically come in three sections and are used mostly to angle for smaller fish.

Next, there is the ledger rod. Generally this rod is more heavy duty and comes in lengths of 10 to 12 feet. The rings on a ledger rod are heavier and hold the line closer to the rod. With heavy line, bait and tackle, the tension keeps the line away from the body of the rod.

Lastly, there is the carp rod. These rods are normally between 11 and 13 feet in length. The carp rod is designed for the potential of longer casting and therefore has larger rings for reduced friction. They can vary in flexibility but a good place to start with this type of rod is a test curve of about 2 1/4. This means the rod will bend to a 90 degree angle when 2 1/4 pounds of weight is put upon it. Although it is called a carp rod, it can be used to catch a variety of species. It is built to handle larger fish with a strong fight.

It is clear that each type of rod has its use. It is important then to be aware of what type of fish will be sought, what type of bait will be used, and what type of extra tackle is necessary. It is also important to have the right coarse fishing rod for the job and the right job for the rod.
