A Guide To Cleaning Ceramic Tiles

By:

Ceramic tiles are a beautiful addition to any home, whether they are chosen for the kitchen floor or the bathroom they come in many different styles, textures, glazing and sizes. However when choosing this flooring for your home it is worth investing the time to understand how to take care of this material so that you get the very most from your tiles.

The first thing that is important to understand about ceramic tiles is that they should be swept regularly but not beaten. Dirt can adhere to the surface of the tile and this is particularly the case for tiles that are textured or have spaces for dirt to cling to. Sweeping the floor every other day insures that this dirt is loosened and removed from your tiles. Hoovers do work well on tiles but make sure that the model you use does not have a beater bar that could scratch or dull your tiles. Using your attachments from your vacuum is usually the best way of cleaning your tiles in this way.

Another way to minimise the amount of dirt that gets onto your ceramic tiles is to purchase a good quality mat. Mats are a good way of capturing the dirt that people bring in on their shoes and if you shake them often outside you will be able to see how much dirt has been caught at the doorway. This is a great way of stopping dirt being tracked across your floors and wearing down the wear to your tile finish. Just make sure people remember to use the mat!

To keep your ceramic tiles in good condition then they should be damp mopped often and it is well worth buying the manufactures grout and tile cleaners. For tiles that have been heavily soiled you can spot clean the floor with a sponge or cloth and there are a whole range of good cleaners available on the market to use for this.

Textured ceramic tiles will require a mild scrubbing for you to get the clean results you will want, using a soft brush. After cleaning the tiles with a mild detergent rinse them all thoroughly with warm water to remove any left over residue. If this stays on it will show up once the detergent has dried and leave white, milky marks on your ceramics. Dry wiping afterwards will also help you to remove this film, as you will be able to see where it is. After cleaning, wipe down to polish for a shiny floor.
