A Guide To Choosing Your Number 1 Beauty Type

By:

So you've decided to go into cosmetology. Great! But while you'll have to know a little bit of everything to find your way around the salon, you'll also have to specialize, at least at first, in order to attract the most select clientele. You have to get really good in one area so that people will recognize you as an expert. Only then should you go on to found your salon. So what is there to choose from? Beauty practice generally falls into 2 basic types: nails and hair.

Fabulous Nails
You may think you can do your nails, but they're probably harder than you think, and there are many varieties. Ladies (and some men!) are very particular about their nails, too, so you need to develop exacting standards. You'll have to learn how to do artificial nails, which involves heat and glue and sanding and polishing a fake nail onto the skin. It's practically surgery, and you can hurt a person if you're not careful! It's not for the faint of heart.

You will also be called upon to give manicures and pedicures. Here, you'll soak a person's hands and/or feet, taking care not to tickle them, before using a stone, or creams, or oils, or whatever you think most appropriate, to smooth the skin of the foot or hand. Then you'll trim away the excess nails and perhaps apply some polish. If you don't like feet, nails may not be for you!

Then there's the polishing itself. You'll have to develop a strong eye for the appropriate colors a person might want to wear on her hand, and you'll need to develop a keen eye and a steady hand for applying the polish. If you let it get lumpy, your customers will not return. Finally, there are air-brushed nails. You don't have to offer these, but you can charge a lot for them in return for creating fancy designs on them. Your creativity is the only limit! Sound like fun? Then nails may be for you!

Stunning Haircuts
If you get into hair styling, there is a lot you'll have to learn, but you can have a lot of fun too. People's hair affects their self-esteem, so they have a lot of emotional energy invested in how it looks. You're responsible for making them look better than they thought they could. Sound like a lot of responsibility? It is! But if you do a good job, the rewards are tremendous. You'll have to learn a lot about different types of hair, different types of cut, curling hair, blow-drying it and all the rest to give your clients exactly what they want and more. Enroll in a cosmetology school today to learn all about it!

Good luck choosing your beauty career!
