A Good Candidate For A Tummy Tuck

By:

It is not enough to want to flatten your stomach by way of a tummy tuck. Doctors will only perform the surgery under a given set of conditions and these include having the correct mindset and be realistic about expectations of what the surgery can accomplish. However, first things first.

Doctors want the patient to be in good health and reasonably fit. They should have no active diseases or serious pre-existing problems such as heart disease, diabetes, or even high blood pressure. These conditions don't make the surgery impossible to obtain, they just make it more difficult to accomplish.

So it is important to talk things over with the surgeon first. It is also very important to select a surgeon who is board certified and licensed to do what you want him to do.

Tummy tuck procedures require patience and stability, especially during the recovery period. Therefore doctors want to assure themselves of their patient's emotional and mental stability prior to doing the operation. Face it, recovery from a tummy tuck can be hard. It is particularly painful in the first few days after surgery. And sometimes, that pain is accompanied by depression. Underlying emotional problems will only make a bad situation, worse.

Doctors like to see good elasticity in the skin. But if human beings had perfect elasticity in the skin, tummy tucks would never be needed, in the first place. Many women seek out tummy tuck surgery following pregnancy, which stretches the skin and the muscles of the abdomen. Doctors recommend waiting to have a tuck until after you've finished having children, otherwise the work done will be wasted when you get pregnant again.

The same holds true for weight loss. Doctors don't want to operate until after you've reached your desired weight level. Because if you lose more weight, you will have to remove more skin in a second operation, which of course means more money spent.

Doctors also require otherwise healthy candidates to quit smoking at least 4 weeks prior to the tummy tuck procedure. And they must continue not to smoke for at least the first three weeks in recovery. Failure to do this leads to a prolonged recovery and maybe even complications such as infection and skin necrosis.

All surgeons use the smallest incisions possible in order to get the job done. However a tummy tuck is not scar-free surgery. The size and length of the scars depend on the actual type of procedure that you choose to have done. Sometime the belly button has to be relocated which adds another incision. Be sure to bring this up in the consultation so that you will know what you have to cover after the incisions are healed.
