A General Overview Of Nose Job Surgery For Prospective Rhinoplasty Patients

By:

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States today, and unlike many other cosmetic procedures, some people who receive this surgery do so for their health. In short, a nose job is a reshaping of the nose.

Well over half of nose job procedures are done for purely cosmetic purposes. Many people dislike the shape of their nose and want to look different, so they get an operation on their nose. Some people, however, choose a nose procedure to help correct structural problems within the nose, such as a deviated septum or other chronic nose problems. Because nose operations are sometimes performed for legitimate medical purposes, you have a greater chance of having your procedure covered (at least partially) by your insurance provider than with many other types of plastic surgery.

Many people wonder if they are candidates for rhinoplasty surgery. Typically, nose procedures can be performed after age 15, and anyone who is uncomfortable with the size or shape of their nose may be a good candidate for the procedure. Many plastic surgeons use computers to help show you what you will look like after the surgery so you can make an informed decision as to whether you want to go through with your treatment or not.

Just like with any surgery, there are risks associated with the rhinoplasty procedure. As is the case with all surgical procedures, there is always a chance for infection. Additionally, blood vessels can burst in the nose, creating small red spots that take months to go away. Sometimes, people require a smaller, second surgery to help complete the look of their cosmetic procedures. Your doctor should be able to tell you if you fall into that category before you start.

One of the best things about nose operations is that, for the overwhelming majority of patients, the final results are positive. The recovery time can be a few weeks long and swelling and bruising can occur. However, painkillers and an ice pack are often enough for most people to minimize discomfort throughout the recovery period.

Perhaps the biggest decision you will ever make about your nose job is the doctor you choose to perform the surgery. As with all cosmetic procedures, your choice of doctor goes a long way in determining the success of the final results.

A nose job is a common and often times satisfactory medical procedure that can reshape your nose and give you a more positive opinion of yourself.
