A Few Things A Car Salesman Might Say To You

By:

Car salesmen historically have had a very bad reputation and throughout the ages of television have been depicted as these UN trustworthy characters. Why have they such a bad reputation I asked myself so started to look a little deeper. Below are a few of my finds as to what a car salesman might just say to you when trying to sell you a car.

Your part ex isn't worth anything to me really

This one is a very popular trick when a car salesman tries to give you as little as possible for your current vehicle. They try and get across to you that they are doing you a really big favour taking it off your hands as ultimately it is a burden on them.

First of all if it wasn't going to make them money they would tell you straight. In reality all they will do is offer you just enough for your vehicle so that they can take it to the auction and get rid of it quickly for a nice tidy profit.

Before you part ex your car check its value in one of the vehicle pricing guides then decide if you can afford to let your car go for less than this.

Somebody else was in yesterday and I think they are taking it

Another nice tactic is to put a little pressure on the buyer by telling them that there are other interested parties. In some cases this may be true but don't be bullied into a purchase as in reality if somebody was in the process of making an offer you can be sure that the salesman would be ushering you to a new vehicle instead of letting you waste his time looking at a car that he knows you won't be able to buy.

If you are allowed to look at a vehicle then you can be certain that there isn't anybody else interested in buying it so keep looking.

I can't knock anything off the price as it's at rock bottom already

If this excuse is used the salesman in question must really believe you are a soft touch. There isn't a salesman alive who will mark their vehicles up at their bottom line price. There will always be room for negotiation so either walk away and call their bluff or put a silly offer down.

At this point the car salesman will probably laugh at you and come back at you with some form of discount.

Car sales is nothing more than a big game. When buying a new car be prepared to play this game. All salesman have targets to make so there will always be room for negotiation. These three simple statements have been used time and time again in car sales so now that you know what to expect you can come up with a plan to deal with them and get the car you really want at a price that you are happy with.
