The Value of Repetition in Soccer Practice

When it comes to soccer practice, the name of the game is repetition. Most soccer drills are repeated at least ten times, and often twenty or more, before a new drill is introduced. Drills are also seldom introduced only once; when the players learn them, they perform them in almost every practice each season. Many of these drills are fundamental, including passing a ball from one player to another, dribbling, and shooting. It is important for players, coaches, and parents to understand that this repetition will encourage perfection on the field. The point is not to do something over and over again, the point is to get better and better at a certain skill. Players who cannot perform a certain move correctly should continue trying until they can do it comfortably. The end goal of repetitive drills is for a player to become so good at a certain skill that he or she can perform it flawlessly and reflexively.

Becoming Proficient in Multiple Soccer Positions

If you play soccer, you probably have a position that you regularly play. It is important to perfect the skills required within the position you play. Few soccer players, however, realize the value of developing the skills needed for other positions. If you play defense, take a little bit of time to build up your goalie or forward skills as well. Being proficient in more than one position helps you in many ways. First, in practicing these positions, you will have a greater awareness of what is going on in the soccer field. You will know what teammates are trying to do and what the opposition is thinking, and this knowledge will give you an advantage on the field. You can help your team operate more smoothly. You will also have an easier time defeating members of the opposite team. Also, your coach will value having a team member that can play more than one position.

At-Home Soccer Practice

Parents, coaches and teammates can do a lot for a player, but ultimately the person who can best help you improve your game is yourself. Practice both on and off the field is key. Each of us, no matter how much we try to hide it, has her own strengths and weaknesses on the field. Time at home is a great time to work out some of these weaknesses with a brother or sister or parent. Even if you only go through drills that your coach has taught you, you will increase your ability on the playing field. Your entire family may become interested in soccer because they see you having fun. Invite your parents to play with you, or to watch you play. Just dribbling the ball to the practice field can be fun and beneficial.

Flexibility

Flexibility is important to soccer players; without it, they are at risk for injury. Overextension can happen at any time during practice or during a game. Daily stretches are important for soccer players, as for any athlete. Coaches need to educate themselves in proper stretching techniques and then pass that information on to their players. Stretching should take the first 15 minutes of practice, and coaches and players should remember to implement some cool-down stretching exercises after the game. Some stretches soccer players need are pretty simple; others are quite complex. New stretches should be demonstrated and explained to keep players from injuring themselves. In order to really be flexible, players should stretch often and stretch well.
