Defensive Strategies in Soccer

The goal of the defender is to keep the ball as far away from the goal area for as long as possible. Being able to guess where your opponents are going and what they are trying to do is crucial to the position. Of course, you need to be aware of where the ball is at all times. Forwards are often skilled at faking their intended direction. Therefore, the best defenders should be able to distinguish between set-ups and the true direction the opponents will go. Defenders should always know where their teammates are at, so they can pass the ball to them as quickly as possible. Communication with the goalie is also key for the defenders.

Developing Speed for Soccer

Speed is one of the most important qualities a soccer player can possess. There are lots of things you can do to increase your speed (and your agility at the same time). Practice timing runs down a field, and add maneuvering obstacles like cones, arches, ladders, and hurdles. You should work on speed exercises both with and without a soccer ball. As your speed increases, begin to add resistance tools to your speed training workout. Some of these tools include sleds, parachutes, and ankle speed bands. Another method of training involves using a mirror belt, which lets you work on change of direction as you improve your speed and strength. Developing strength with speed is valuable because soccer is as much an endurance game as it is a game of speed.

Becoming Proficient in Multiple Soccer Positions

If you have been playing soccer for a while, you probably have a favorite or even an assigned position. It is important to perfect the skills required within the position you play. However, it is also smart to spend some time practicing the skills that go with other positions. For example, if you are a forward, do some practice with the skills that goalies and defenders need. Being versatile gives you a lot of advantages. During soccer games, you will be more aware of what other players are doing. You will be familiar with the thought processes going on with both teammates and opposition, which makes you better able to predict their actions and either help or prevent them. Knowledge and experience of other positions makes you a better team member. You will also be a more difficult player to play against. Having a good understanding and basic skills of several positions also makes you a more valuable player to coaches and teams that you may want to play for.

Developing Strength for Soccer

Strength is an important but overlooked area of soccer training. Be sure to implement it in your practices. First, take advantage of some of the same practices used for strength training across all sports. Weight lifting, sit-ups and push-ups, and in particular all strength exercises for your leg muscles will benefit you in soccer. There are also exercises you can do that are more tailored to necessary soccer abilities. Stamina is critical in soccer. Try using resistance tools, such as running sleds or parachutes, as you run. Soccer players also need arm strength for maneuvering around obstacles, handling throw-ins, and tending the goal. You can use a specialized, weighted ball for many exercises that will develop strength (though you should not use these balls for heading or kicking).
