Why Do Soccer Practices Use So Much Repetition?

Soccer practice is all about repetition. It is both typical and smart for a player to repeat a drill about twenty times or more before beginning another drill. All of these drills will also likely be repeated from practice to practice and from season to season. Soccer drills are designed to perfect the fundamental soccer skills, like passing, shooting, and dribbling. Some players may get fed up with all the repetition, but they should know that practicing these basics frees them to focus on strategy during games. It is also important for coaches to increase the performance expectations of the particular drill. Players who cannot perform a certain move correctly should continue trying until they can do it comfortably. When a player masters a drill, they are able to perform that function on the field without thinking about it.

Increasing Your Speed on the Soccer Field

Even if you are an incredibly strong or agile player, there is little you can do for your team on the soccer field if you have not developed your speed. If you want to increase your speed, there are lots of exercises you can utilize, many of which also help with agility. Practice timing runs down a field, and add maneuvering obstacles like cones, arches, ladders, and hurdles. Make sure to work on speed with the soccer ball and without it. Once you have increased your speed, you can use resistance tools with your runs. Some of these tools include sleds, parachutes, and ankle speed bands. If you have a teammate to work with, try using mirror belts. They let you work on resistance, agility, and speed all at the same time. Developing strength with speed is valuable because soccer is as much an endurance game as it is a game of speed.

What to Focus on in Soccer Training

There are three main areas of ability to focus on when training for soccer: speed, agility, and strength. Speed is somewhat of an obvious skill, since soccer is a very fast-moving game. The more ability you have to keep up with the ball and outrun other players, the more likely you are to achieve big plays for your team. In soccer, you should develop your speed in both sprints and endurance runs. Another key skill to work on is agility. Agility allows you to move around players, make contact with the ball even when it seems out of reach, and defend the goal. If you want to defeat other teams in terms of power, strength training is a third crucial area to develop. Developing your strength will also allow you to perform soccer skills better, over a longer period of time, than your opponents. With development in these three skills, you are on your way to being a valuable addition to any soccer team.

Developing Flexibility as a Soccer Player

Flexibility is important to soccer players; without it, they are at risk for injury. It is all too easy for soccer players to overextend themselves and cause muscle or ligament damage. All soccer players should learn how to stretch properly, and do so daily. One job of the soccer coach is to know proper techniques and teach them to his or her players. A player need not stretch for hours and hours, but a good stretching session of 15 to 30 minutes at the beginning and sometimes at the end of practice can increase mobility and flexibility. Some stretches soccer players need are pretty simple; others are quite complex. New stretches should be demonstrated and explained to keep players from injuring themselves. Remember to stretch well and stretch often to ensure muscle flexibility.
