A Family's Best Friend Is Their Dog

By:

As I write, there is a dog curled up next to me, a German Shepherd Dog called Jess. Our family has had the pleasure of her company for some eight years or so now and, for us, Jess represents everything about a dog that owners could wish for. She is gentle and good-natured, playful and obedient, and has her own unique character that we have come to understand and appreciate over the years. As I look at her, all the reasons for owning a dog are clear: quite simply, she is a fantastic pal.

For many people, young and old alike, and particularly those who live alone, their dog is their best friend - and there are many reasons for this. A dog is the ultimate companion. She won't judge our sins, real or imagined, get angry with us, lie to us or cheat us. She may, of course, be miserable if we treat her badly, but she will never blame us - her innocence and trust is complete.

It is a well-known fact that dogs are great stress-relievers. Dogs are more willing and receptive to your emotions than humans: who else will happily listen to your moans and groans day in and day out, celebrate with you when no one else is there to share special moments, and comfort you in hours of need.

There are few things more relaxing than getting home from a hard day's work and being welcomed by a creature that is absolutely ecstatic to see you, then taking her for a walk to relieve your mental strains and physical aches.

However, in order to achieve a rewarding and a problem-free relationship with a dog, it is essential to realize that having some inkling of how a dog thinks and feels goes a long way to achieving success in these departments. As with anything in life, the more you put into something, the more you get out of it.

Successful relationships are based on positive two-way communication and respect. By being a fair and positive leader to your dog, you can define a code of practice and behavior that your dog understands and responds to in the way that you would wish. You can shape your new friend into a well-mannered adult that you can be proud of and everyone will admire, love and want to own. Your dog deserves no less.

There are many aspects to dog ownership, and there may be topics covered that you have never previously thought about. Prospective owners will see that they must carefully consider all of those elements before taking the plunge and getting a dog, for their own and the animal's sake.
