A Dream Career Can Renew Your Life

"The creative spirit is forever making all things new.' - Ernest Holmes

Have you ever responded, "Same old, same old," when someone has asked you how things are? If you have, you're like a lot of us - at least at times.

What if, though, the next time someone asked you that question, you were able to respond like this:

"Things are wonderful! I'm now in a job that I love, I work with creative, dynamic people and I just got assigned the most exciting project. Let me tell you about it!"

Then your friend's eyes glaze over while the words excitedly stream out of you. You cannot contain your excitement.

Does this scenario sound like an unreachable dream? It's not! This is how it should be.

This is how you should feel most days. This is the excitement you should experience. This is the aliveness you should feel coursing through your veins.

If this description is 180 degrees from how you usually feel, chances are you are either not in the right career or you have not found a way to enliven the career you are in.

Let's discuss a key reason why you might not be where you want to be.

Our quotation today points to the answer: we are not in enough contact with the spirit within which can animate, support and lead us to our meaningful work.

Think about it.

We all know that we are more than the sum of our personality parts. We've all had moments where we've felt the power of that inner spirit. We've found our soul mate; a long-standing argument with a friend was healed; we got the house we wanted easily and effortlessly.

Think about examples from your own life when you know that something happened or changed in seemingly magical ways and without your effort being much of a factor.

That is the action of spirit in your life.

Our spirit is that part of ourselves which sees farther and knows more than we possibly can from the limited perspective of our personalities. It is also that which calls us to be and do more.

I once received a card that had a picture of an angel leaning lovingly over a plant and the quotation was, "And the angel whispered, 'Grow, grow.'"

That's what I picture when I think about the guiding spirit that is part of who we are. It constantly whispers to us, "Grow, grow."

If spirit is constantly whispering to us, why don't we hear it?

The key reason is that we don't take the time to listen.

Do you know the story of the man who was constantly praying to God? He was asking and asking and asking for what he wanted. Day and night he asked.

Finally, after never receiving an answer, he complained loudly, "God, I've been praying and asking constantly, but you never answer me." And God responded, "That's because you are never still enough to hear my answers."

Spirit, or God, speaks softly. Spirit thrives in silence and quiet.

So if you want to enlist the creative, ever-renewing spirit to help you get your dream career; or help you find a way to renew the excitement you used to have in your job; or uncover the means to make the contribution you've always wanted to make, spend some time in silence.

It doesn't have to be a lot of time. 15 minutes in the morning or evening will suffice. Think about your question before you go to sleep at night.

Expect an answer. Pay attention to things people say, programs or books they refer you to. Spirit is not limited in the way it works.

But spirit is definitely our partner in life. It knows your life purpose. It knows what contribution you came here to make, and it will help you renew your life and your career if you let it.
