A Dog Collar Saved The Day

By:

About ten years ago, I drove over to our lodge building to take care of some business, and while I was getting out of my car a basset hound puppy hobbled toward me, holding up one paw. I slowly approached him, not wanting to scare him off since there was obviously something wrong, and slowly lifted his paw. A thorn had gotten stuck in the pad on his paw, and as he looked at me with those mournful eyes, I felt that he expected me to do something about it. Carefully, I pulled the thorn from his paw, and when he put it back down on the pavement, he looked very relieved.

Our lodge was adjacent to a residential neighborhood, and I assumed that the dog was from there, but when I checked his ID tags, I noticed that he was very far from his home. Basset hounds are known for wandering off; they pick up a scent and follow it, and before they know it, they can be miles and miles away from home, Not knowing what the deal was, but feeling pretty certain that the owners of this dog wanted him back, I loaded him into my car and headed over to his neighborhood.

I was worried that the dog might panic, or even worse, might decide to use my passenger's seat for a toilet, but to my pleasant surprise he was calm and happy as we drove. We finally reached his neighborhood, and after checking some house numbers, I was able to locate his home. He seemed to recognize the place and became very excited as we got out of the car.

I double checked the address on his ID tag and escorted him to the front door. No one answered, and they didn't have a fenced in back yard. I didn't want to leave him, knowing that he would likely wander off again, so I checked around the outside of the house and found the side door to the garage unlocked. I checked to make sure he would be safe, and before I could do anything about it, he bounded into the garage, happy to be in familiar surroundings.

I drove back to the lodge and noticed a truck driving slowly through the neighborhood, the driver and his passenger intently scanning the area as they passed. I thought about stopping them and asking if the dog was theirs, but the moved on a little too quickly. In any case, I am sure that they were overjoyed when they got home and found their puppy, safe and sound, all due to their foresight in investing him with a leather dog collar and personalized dog ID tag.
