A Day In The British Museum Could Change Your Life

The British Museum really is the type of place that could change your life forever. It is often argued that if we don't know where we came from then you can't know where we are going to. As you walk around this collection of over seven million objects you will get a real sense of what we humans have come from and what we are. Reading about the past in books is one thing, but when you see for yourself our history in the flesh it can cause us to view the world differently.

The British Museum has been built in 1753 and it is in the heart of London on Russell Street. This is the largest collection of its kind in the world in it covers all aspects of human history and every civilization. The numbers of items on display is immense, but there is even more than this that the museum doesn't have room to put on show. It would take days to see everything in the museum, but people can afford to visit more than once because admission is free.

There is some controversy surrounding this institution. It is the home of artifacts from around the world, and some of these countries feel that it is wrong that they are not returned. These objects are priceless and include such things as; the Rosetta stone, Mold's Golden Cape, Ethiopian Tabots, and aboriginal human remains from Tasmania. Understandably the British Museumis not so eager to hand these back, and as much of their collection comes from abroad returning things to where they once belonged would quickly clear out the museum. Luckily for the visitor there seems to be no likelihood that these items will be going back to their original location any time soon.

As you walk around the many exhibition rooms it is impossible to be unaffected by it all. In fact some people can get quite emotional. You really get to see what being human means and how far our journey has taken us. These objects feel part of us and we stop seeing ourselves as belonging to certain nations and instead realize that we are part of the human race and despite our faults we have developed as one. When you see the ancient Egyptian Mummies or the artifacts from all our human wars it all seems to fall into some type of context. When we see the colossal skeletons of dinosaurs it is a startling reminder of how fragile life is on the planet.

The British Museum is a must see for anyone visiting London. This life changing collection is something that all of us should experience at least once in our lives. Some of the greatest minds in human history have spent time walking around the exhibition rooms and pondering the artifacts so why not join them. Allow your imagination to be taken back to the beginning and travel through time to where we are today. If you make this journey you will look at the world differently.
