A Crash Course On Organic Foods

By:

If you're like the rest of the country, you've probably been hearing a lot about organic food on television and rightly so, because there are a number of reasons to begin incorporating as much organic food as you can find into your diet. Many people think that organic food is overhyped, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Organic foods are superior to most of the foods that you get in an average supermarket because they are completely natural. Organic foods typically contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals than genetically modified (GMO) foods. GMO foods are modified to at the genetic level to be more resistant to diseases, to produce more, and to be resistant to certain insects. On top of this is the amount of pesticides and in the case of livestock, hormones and antibiotics, that are used. When eating GMO foods, you're basically eating a mass scale frankenstein experiment.

The standards to be met in order to be classified as organic are quite high, resulting in a quality of food not seen since before the dawn of processed food.

It must avoid the use of pesticides.

Organic meats must not have been treated with antibiotics or growth hormones.

Animals must be raised in more open and sanitary conditions.

Organic foods are not allowed to have additives.

To avoid eating GMO foods, there are a lot of things that you can do. Eat as much food labeled as 100% organic as possible, but if you can't find any locally, the best place to shop is your local farmer's market.

Corn (and thus, popcorn) is often genetically modified, so try to find these in organic form, if possible.

If possible, try to grow your own fruits and vegetables. Vegetables may be easier than fruits, however.

Avoid products that contain aspartame. This is often found in chewing and bubble gum and a large portion of items that are labeled as "sugarfree". Aspartame is toxic and grown from genetically modified E. coli bacteria.

Avoid eating frozen dinners; it is very rare that you can find these in organic form, if you can find them at all. Most canned soups contain GMO organisms, so these should be avoided, also.

If you're going to avoid as much GMO food as possible, the best thing to do is to cook all of your meals from fresh ingredients. At least then you know personally what is in your food and you can feel good knowing that you prepared it yourself.
