A Cranberry Toothpaste?

By:

Some of us may remember when reports came out of the University of Rochester that suggested people might want to try brushing with cranberries. Apparently, the UofR team, tested cranberries effect on a synthetic enamel-like material and found that the tiny, tart fruit had rather big abilities to repel cavity-causing bacteria.

The tiny red berries also showed the ability to ward off the formation of plaque. And soon, people all over the world saw a highly-effective cranberry toothpaste in its future. (this writer cringes at the thought)

But researchers and dentists shouted at the excited people, "Not so fast!" These experts saw a few flaws in the idea of a super cranberry toothpaste.

For one, when consuming any kind of cranberry delight, it has first been mixed with quite a bit of sugar to make it palatable. Needless to say, the Rochester experiments did not add sugar to the mix, yet most of the popular cranberry products on our store shelves are loaded with it.

Those of us who like to keep up on the dental trend replied, "no problem." We could simply add some xylitol, which is a natural sweetener. But there was an even larger problem with the idea of cranberry toothpaste.

Cranberries are not only very bitter, they are also extremely acidic. And unless you've lived under a rock your entire life, you probably are aware that acidic foods wear away the tooth enamel.

So for now, just wait, say dentists. Bummer. If there ever will be a cranberry toothpaste on the horizon, manufacturers are going to have to figure out a way to isolate all the beneficial compounds of the berry while removing the bitter and acidic problems.

So, they may not fight cavities in the near future, but they sure do taste good with turkey and stuffing.
