The Value of Repetition in Soccer Practice

When it comes to soccer practice, the name of the game is repetition. Most soccer drills are repeated at least ten times, and often twenty or more, before a new drill is introduced. Drills are also seldom introduced only once; when the players learn them, they perform them in almost every practice each season. Soccer drills are designed to perfect the fundamental soccer skills, like passing, shooting, and dribbling. It is important for players, coaches, and parents to understand that this repetition will encourage perfection on the field. The point is not to do something over and over again, the point is to get better and better at a certain skill. If a player does it wrong, a player must repeat it until he or she can do it right. The end goal of repetitive drills is for a player to become so good at a certain skill that he or she can perform it flawlessly and reflexively.

Playing Soccer with the Family

As with any sport, you must be determined and dedicated to excel. Great soccer player understands the importance of practicing on and off the field. No player is perfect; everyone has something that he or she can improve on. Practicing with parents or siblings at home lets you improve your game and develop family relationships at the same time. You do not necessarily have to do anything different that what you do with your coach during practice. If you practice at home, it is likely that other family members will become interested in soccer. Invite your parents to play with you, or to watch you play. Your family may even get into the game just by dribbling the ball with you to the soccer field.

Developing Strength for Soccer

Strength is an important but overlooked area of soccer training. Be sure to implement it in your practices. Some strength training exercises used in any sport are also great for soccer. Focus on exercises that strengthen your leg muscles, but do not neglect sit-ups, push-ups, and weight training. There are also exercises you can do that are more tailored to necessary soccer abilities. Stamina is critical in soccer. Try using resistance tools, such as running sleds or parachutes, as you run. Also, strength is critical in many aspects of ball handling, such as throw-ins. You can use a specialized, weighted ball for many exercises that will develop strength (though you should not use these balls for heading or kicking).

The Importance of Practicing Several Positions

If you have been playing soccer for a while, you probably have a favorite or even an assigned position. It is important to perfect the skills required within the position you play. However, it is also smart to spend some time practicing the skills that go with other positions. For example, if you are a forward, do some practice with the skills that goalies and defenders need. This gives you several advantages. During soccer games, you will be more aware of what other players are doing. You will know what both team members and opponents are thinking, and you may become better at predicting their movements because you know what it is like to have their goal in mind. Knowledge and experience of other positions makes you a better team member. You will also be a more difficult player to play against. Also, your coach will value having a team member that can play more than one position.
