Strength Training for Soccer

Strength is an important but overlooked area of soccer training. Be sure to implement it in your practices. Some strength training exercises used in any sport are also great for soccer. Focus on exercises that strengthen your leg muscles, but do not neglect sit-ups, push-ups, and weight training. There are also exercises you can do that are more tailored to necessary soccer abilities. With the amount of running required in a soccer game, it is a good idea to build up your stamina. You can build strength for running by using tools that increase resistance, like parachutes and sleds. Also, strength is critical in many aspects of ball handling, such as throw-ins. You may find it useful to purchase a weighted ball to develop arm strength. These balls should not be used for kicking or heading.

Flexibility

If soccer players are not flexible, they can cause damage to themselves by overextending their muscles. Overextension can happen at any time during practice or during a game. To prevent this, players must learn correct stretching techniques and apply those techniques on a daily basis. One job of the soccer coach is to know proper techniques and teach them to his or her players. A player need not stretch for hours and hours, but a good stretching session of 15 to 30 minutes at the beginning and sometimes at the end of practice can increase mobility and flexibility. Some stretches soccer players need are pretty simple; others are quite complex. When trying a new stretch, players should always know what muscle groups they are supposed to be focusing on. Remember to stretch well and stretch often to ensure muscle flexibility.

At-Home Soccer Practice

As an athlete, you must realize that your expertise and skill as a soccer player is ultimately determined by yourself. Truly committed soccer players are willing to put in independent practice time. Even if you are an excellent soccer player, there are still areas in which you can improve. Time at home is a great time to work out some of these weaknesses with a brother or sister or parent. Even if you only go through drills that your coach has taught you, you will increase your ability on the playing field. Practicing at home also helps make your family interested in the sport. Extend an invitation to your parents to play with you or to come to your games. Just dribbling the ball to the practice field can be fun and beneficial.

What to Focus on in Soccer Training

There are three main areas of ability to focus on when training for soccer: speed, agility, and strength. Soccer is played at a high-speed level, so it is clear why being fast is important. The more ability you have to keep up with the ball and outrun other players, the more likely you are to achieve big plays for your team. Soccer demands lots of fast spurts of speed within a general marathon-like running session, so develop your speed over both short and long distances. Agility is also important in soccer. Agility allows you to move around players, make contact with the ball even when it seems out of reach, and defend the goal. Though often overlooked, strength training is an area that will help you out-power your opponents. Strength training will also contribute to your overall endurance. Focusing on these three areas will allow you to be a threat on any soccer field.
