Escaping for a day at the City of Alkmaar

Alkmaar is an ideal place to spend a day tour in as its only a few kilometers off of Amsterdam proper. Alkmaar has many interesting sights and sounds to offer the tourist especially since its considered as the cheese capital of Holland. More than cheese, they also have many historical museums worth the visit such as the City Museum of Alkmaar, the National Beer Museum, a Beatles Museum since John Lennons first guitar was apparently made here, and of course, the Holland Cheese Museum. Among many attractions, the cheese market in Waagplein is by far the most popular of them all. And its only open from April to September, when the cheeses undergo a weighing ceremony to the delight of the crowds, so its best to plan a trip in those conditions. The buying isnt actually set in the market though although you can buy different kinds of specialized cheeses in the surrounding stalls after the ceremony. Aside from the cheese, Alkmaar also has many quaint stores, boutiques, restaurants and cafes that are a refreshing take from the more commercialized spots in Amsterdam proper. After which, relax in their many open terraces and restaurants in the area.

The Different Architectural Flavors of Oostelijk Havengebied in Amsterdam

Structure enthusiasts, students and professionals alike will surely be surprised at the many offerings Amsterdam has in terms of architecture found at Oostelijk Havengebied. Also considered as the Eastern Docklands, there are many functional and impressive buildings found in Oostelijk. For example, theres the Passengers Terminal Amsterdam, which is where many cruise ships and vessels dock for a start or stopover, quite impressive with its glass exterior made to look like a wave. Theres also Loods 6 which was once the departure hall of the Royal Dutch Steam Ship Company and is always worth the visit as there are many artists that collaborated on the project such as Horn and van den Steene to make this the historical structure it is today. Music Building on the IJ is another beautiful modern piece that is home to different concerts for almost any music genre with a caf and restaurant beside the water. Lastly, dont forget to check out Pythonbrug, a red bridge made to look like a snake slithering through the waters. Do an educational excursion and Amsterdam surely wont disappoint.

De Pijp, The Road Less Traveled for Tourists in Amsterdam

De Pijp is a working class district, much less hyped up by tourists when compared to more tourist-friendly areas such as Centrum, but De Pijp has so many things to offer the more adventurous ones as it merges many cultures so effortlessly that they provide a new blend on their own thats truly worthy of a day tour. De Pijp is a melting pot of sorts for many cultures which is evident in their cuisine offerings. The most famous attraction at De Pijp is the Albert Cuyp Market, the largest outdoor market in all of Netherlands selling everything from flowers to medicine at rock bottom prices. The market is open 6 days a week excluding Sunday from 9: 00 AM to 6: 00 PM. Mamouche, a restaurant in the area, has sumptuous North African dishes peppered with a Western European taste and theres also Bazar, an Arabian restaurant spiced up with a North African twist. Dont forget to shop around the small, quaint shops too as De Pijp is an artists town, and will surely surprise you at every turn.

Exploring the Muiderslot Castle and Museum

Just 15 kilometers off Amsterdam, in the town of Muiden, the Muiderslot Castle (named so because Muiden means rivermouth, affirming the castles location) is set to explore its 132nd anniversary as a museum this coming 2010. The castle houses many ancient arms, armories and paintings back from its original state as a residence and ammunition depot. The local government of Muiden had to save this once-decaying castle as it was set for demolition by the Netherland National government before it was declared as an important historical site in correlation to Amsterdam and the town, now reaping its share of tourists everyday. All of its rooms down to its kitchen are now fully restored to its original state when it was built by the count Floris V. From Amsterdam, one can either drive going to the castle or take a bus at Amstel Station which can take one to Muidens town center every 15 minutes.
