Zaanse Schans is a town with an old world charm featuring many important sights in Dutch history and is quite an easy town to take a day trip in, being only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper. There are so many details in this town that show remnants of it as an old 17th century industrial village from the clog workshop, the still working windmills which allow visitors in on selected days and the cheese factory. The cheese factory is a great place to go to as it gives out a quiet tour of how cheeses are made and even distributes samples for tourists. One can either bike going to Zaanse Schans or take the train to Koog Zaandjik and then walking about 10 minutes going to the museum village. Zaanse Schans is best kept as a one day trip and not an overnighter since they only have one accommodation available, the Hotel Sans Pareil. After walking through the town, drop by the Museum Zaans to get some knowledge about how their local customs came to be.

Walking through Amsterdams Sights and Attractions

Although cycling is the preferred transportation mode of most Amsterdammers, visiting tourists should first try walking through the village the first time to get a more slow-paced perspective of their lifestyles and the hidden attractions that are found within their walls. Walking is a great way to see the city because most of the attractions are close enough to each other that its possible to do so anyway. When a good sense of direction and discipline is available, then a map will be the only instrument youll need. Otherwise, one might one to go through a guided tour as a better option. The Amsterdam Tourism and Convention Board offer many walking tours depending on the priorities of the individual, from discovering Amsterdams City Centre or off to the Jordaan District to going to a more pinpointed theme like discovering the different Jewish Quarters or going through the Latin part of Amsterdam, Pijp. A guided tour will take about 3 to 4 hours to complete and its more reasonably priced than any other tour out there where one has to pay for bus, car or cycling transportation.

Visiting Amsterdams Historic Cinemas

A trip to Amsterdam wont be complete without enriching oneself in many Amsterdammers local pastime: going to the cinemas. In fact, the love for film is so inculcated in their system that its no wonder that many major film festivals are held here such as the International Documentary Film Festival and Cinekid Festival. Amsterdam has a great love for independent films evident in the numerous cinemas found in the area, most having great ambiance and historical significance such as the elegant Path Tuschinski, the Het Ketelhuis, Pathe de Munt an Rialto Filmtheater. They also have a movie house which is run by students, the Kriterion. Plus, theres the Film Museum in Vondelpark which shows many art films and classic movies all year round. The language barrier shouldnt be a problem since there are many cinemas offering Hollywood films although for a more in-depth experience, it is recommended that you sit through a local Dutch film to get a feel for their art. The love for movies is just so evident here that its easy to get intoxicated!

Cooling it out on the Beaches of Amsterdam

Whether its for a lively party scene or a serene day with the family, the beaches of Amsterdam provide a refreshing escape from the city. The beaches down their North Coast are a convenient escape to the busy city center and can even be accessed using mere public transportation or a short drive with friends. North Amsterdam has Bloemendaal and Zandvoort which are great party places as they have pavilions to hang around in. There are also bars and restaurants found in their 40 or so pavilions. For those who want the complete set of live party music, a DJ and some of the wildest bunch to hang out with, then go to Bloemendaal. For those who want something a little less crowded and more serene, theres Egmond aan Zee, Schoorl and Castricum. Egmond Aan Zee is the nearest beach from Amsterdam, close to the shopping district with quaint jewelry shops and restaurants to choose from.
