A Close Look At All In One Printers

By:

All in one printers are devices which consolidate different machines into one unit. They're capable of carrying out scanning, copying, faxing and of course printing tasks. Many businesses, offices and even home offices are taking advantage of them. Also called MFPs or multifunction printers, they help save both space and money.

They first showed up in the early 90s. During that time, they were very expensive and bulky so only large corporations were able to take advantage of them. Likewise, most of these machines provided only mediocre performance. But thanks to technological advancements, they became more and more compact and reliable. Most of their price tags too ended up being more affordable, fitting within the means of many consumers.

Something that employs inkjet technology is more suited for budget-conscious consumers. Even homes with occasional scanning, copying and faxing needs, other than printing, can benefit from such device. However, inkjet technology may work slower than a laser counterpart. But to great news about it is it can produce more photo-realistic images.

On the other hand, environments requiring documents rendered with professional quality can benefit from having a unit which uses laser technology. It's also a fast worker to prevent bottlenecking of tasks in the workplace. Although the unit is likely to be more expensive, in the long run it's more economical because of lower cost per print. While there are models which can produce monochrome output, there are also those which can dish out color ones.

When purchasing one for your business or home, there are certain things to consider. It's a wise decision to go for something coming from a reliable manufacturer. While it will definitely cost more than something that's offered by a virtually unknown manufacturer, you can be sure it's durable enough and will more likely deliver consistent performance. Finding accessories, parts and service for it too won't give you a headache.

A machine should be able to multitask. Be careful as some units out there may not have functions that may be used simultaneously. If such is the case, you're better off installing different types of machines. It should also be easily operated. The interface has to be user-friendly and intuitive. It's best if there's a feature around for easy access to online support.

Some units allow certain features to be used even without turning on the computer to which it's connected. For example, PictBridge makes it possible to print the contents of a digital camera, bypassing the computer. Having a built-in USB port and memory card slot are also advantageous. There are models which permit you to scan directly to a storage device plugged into the machine, like a flash memory stick. A stand-alone fax allows you to send and receive messages even when the computer is switched off.

Most of the time, all in one printers are shared by computers in a network. Go for something which can be easily integrated into your currently existing network. While there are models which connect via standard network interface, currently there are also those which may be set up wirelessly. In choosing which device to go for, consider your needs and budget.
