A Canoe Ride Along The Kerala Backwaters

Tucked along the southern most tip of India, Kerala is famous for its impressive, 600km-long coastline with a string of palm-fringed beaches lining the azure waters of the Arabian Sea well complented by its serene backwaters that give it a mystical charm of an oil painting!

There are many unspoilt delights where you can lie down on a hammock and gaze at the spectacular semicircular bays and miles and miles of golden sand that you might for a moment mistake it for a mirage!

Backwater cruises are quite popular in Kerala and make an inseparable part of any Kerala itinerey; however of you want to see the backwaters in a more laid back pace, a canoe trip would be the right choice. Gliding along the waters, you can even get off at the tiny villages on the banks to see the unhurried village life up close! These labrynthine maze of canals form an efficient transport networks as well and is used even today for ferrying goods and passengers.

Canoe trips last from 1 hour to a full day. These are cheaper than housebotas and can carry a maximum of four adults ; however the catch is that you will be exposed to the rain or shine as the case may be as it is an open boat with no engine. Rowing is exerting as well so it will be a good idea to take turns.

The canoe can traverse through even smaller canals, which are not accessible to the larger houseboats thereby taking you into the heart of the hinterlands and wooded patches of Kerala riverbanks. Do not miss out the rope making units on either side of the banks where women and men make hand spun rope. You can also see many village lads busy fishing or swimming in the placid backwaters. Rowing the canoe would work up your apettite and a snack is always welcome. There are small tea shops where you can savour a piping hot cup of tea. There are toddy shops as well in case you are interested to sample the tangy flavour of the local drink , which is tapped from coconut palm. No matter whatever you choose to do, a canoe trip would remain as a well cherished memory of a Kerala holiday!
