A Brief Understanding Of External Hemorrhoids

By:

External hemorrhoids, also called prolapsed hemorrhoids, are simply blood veins near the anal or rectal area. What makes a hemorrhoids is when theses blood veins have expanded beyond their normal size that often results in a prolapse of the vein into or around the sphincter.

When these veins expand and do not retract it is a sign that the lining of the walls of these veins are in a weaker state and will grow into a mass at the opening of the anus. They may form inside the anus or at the anal verge, external hemorrhoids forms just outside of the anus.

Researchers still do not quite understand what the exact cause of external hemorrhoids are an why they form. They can, however, be caused by sitting on the toilet for too long, or too much straining while passing a bowl movement, and they are at times caused by strain and excess weight of a fetus during pregnancy. Other then these few facts, there is not much to be understood as to what causes theses veins to bulge out and be troublesome to an individual.

External hemorrhoids are very painful due to the fact that they are often accompanied by swelling and irritation. There is soreness involved, there can be difficulty sitting down, discomfort while passing bowls and also itching. Itching, also often thought to be a symptom of external hemorrhoids, is more commonly due to skin irritation.

Depending on how severe external hemorrhoids are, surgery can be avoided, as generally, surgery is what people resort to, just to alleviate the terrible pain and discomfort that they are feeling. However, there are natural and holistic remedies that can be used to get rid of hemorrhoids naturally, to avoid surgery completely.

Some helpful advice would be to increase your water intake and also increase the amount of fiber in your diet, which will help keep your stools soft. Also, after a bowl movement, refrain from using toilet paper, use wet wipes instead which will reduce some of the irritation you may be feeling. To stop the itching, try taking a warm bath before your hemorrhoids heal. There are also over the counter salves which may be helpful to reduce the redness, soreness and itchiness.

If any of the recommendations above do not work for you, your medical professional my recommend surgery. If your hemorrhoid is small in size, it can be banded. a band would be placed around the base of the hemorrhoids. This banding stops the circulation of blood that feeds the hemorrhoids. Then the hemorrhoid shrivels away. Some medical professionals treat hemorrhoids with sclerosing agents, which do the same thing as a band.

Another form of treatment that the medical professionals use is called laser coagulation. With laser coagulation, a small electrical current is applied to the hemorrhoid by a probe. This electrical current will them cause the blood flow that goes to the hemorrhoid to stop. Which in turn causes is to wither away.

With larger hemorrhoids surgical removal is performed, usually with local or spinal anesthesia. After the hemorrhoid is removed gauze packing is used to help reduce bleeding. Afterward, it takes time for this to heal, which can be up to a week or even longer.

Many people resort to home treatments for hemorrhoids due to the inherent risks of surgical procedures. As well as the long recovery times with invasive procedures. Therefore surgery might be something that you, too, choose as a last resort. If there is any rectal bleeding, do however, see your physician as soon as possible.
