The term BB comes from ball bearing or bullet ball. The guns that use them to shoot projectiles are called as BB guns. The pellets used in these type of guns are spherical and almost of the same size. In case of bird hunting the pellets might have a conical shape. Modern BB guns use pellets that are steel made and sometimes copper coated to prevent corrosion. The guns have a barrel with a diameter of 4.5mm. A rifle BB gun has a slightly larger diameter and uses lead made pellets.

The Red Ryder is the most famous BB gun whose design is based on the famous Winchester rifle. Air soft guns are also commonly known as BB guns. These guns lack the stabilization mechanism that is necessary for long distance shooting.

Uses of BB guns

The pellets used in such cases are rubber made or plastic make. They are not dangerous and can not cause bodily harm to people. The plastic BB pellets are also used to fire when a crowd gets violent. 2. The BB guns are also used for competition purposes. The BB rifles are used for long distance shooting competitions while the short guns are used for shorter distance marksmanship.
3. Quick kill training programs conducted by the US army uses BB guns for training the new seals. These guns are light and have very basic functionalities and so are very easy to use.
4. The BB guns are also used for hunting purposes and bird marking.
5. The BB is one of the most common air gun ammunition used in USA.
6. These guns are also very commonly used in houses for personal defence.
7. Bb guns are also used in zoos for medication of the animals. Darts are put in to the barrels of the BB guns and shot at the animals to make them unconscious for a period till they have been examined thoroughly.

The BB guns therefore though not as powerful as the other modern ammunitions but still holds popularity among the common people who cannot afford to buy the high end ammunitions. The pellets used are not very costly and found easily in the local ammunition shops. These guns have smooth bore barrels and are intended in imparting very low range of damage to the target.
